-Worley is tuff as nails. As much as he was banged he still led us down to redzone opportunities to the end. Props.
-WRs: played well but missed a dynamic Wolfe and pearson. Still several key drops
-Sutton: this kid is a highlight real. Big hit after big hit.
-Hurd: 2 nice runs hopeful glimpses of our future.
-Online: obviously out manned by 50 lbs. But they gave it all they had. 3 games with 3 different personal lineups in spots will take time for them to gel not knowing who's at tackle game to game.
-darr was darr. Inconsistent

All in all this game was much closer than score depicts. To beat a giant u have to get a few breaks and be turnover free. Easily could have been 27-24 going late into the fourth. And after watching fl/my and ga/sc hold on folks...bc we can hang in these games. Proud of our young VOLS efforts in Norman

Worley needs a brain scan to make sure he's still got all his marbles in place. Actually, I'm being serious. What a beating! :thud:

My take:
-2 turnovers in the endzone
-Blown call on the OU fumble we recovered.
-O line has got to get better
-Worley is tough but has to read the run better (1 -turnover in the end zone is prevented if he angles the run more and scores
-Game could have been 20-20 in the 4th quarter
-Team as a whole is much better and the Defense is really good
-I like the progress we've made
-With our really good teams from Fulmer years this would have been a very hard game to win
-Everyone chill we are on the way back

Go Vols!

-Our secondary is good. Last year's D would have given up 50+ to this OK team mainly because the long runs and YAC would have gone for TD's while this time we came up with tackles and held for FGs.

-Our QB is one tough dude. Showed it last night in front of the entire country. Worley is now on the radar of pro scouts and could play himself into the league the rest of the way.

-We now know why Hurd is our featured RB over Lane. Can't believe he didn't break one or two against our first two opponents, but he will be a monster by the end of the season. He may run for 1,000 this year.

One thing that stood out to me is the conditioning of our players. They were not gassed in the 4,th quarter. They continued to hang in there. That is a big positive going forward.

I agree with everyone's point so far, Worley is tough as nails I agree but the back up better be ready (Peterman). Also I really enjoyed the team not laying down and giving up, that has shown me more than anything during the game last night.

Hurd is going to be something special here, we just need a nasty OLine to block for him.
Cam Sutton is all American, Coleman continues to hurt us, hope he gets it together. Derek Barnett another special guy and can't wait till we get our DT's.
Butch is turning this program around and I'm proud of our boys last night even in defeat.

Oklahoma is a natl championship caliber team, and I will watch them close this year. Their fans have been classy (for what I've read) and hope they have that great year. One more thing I know this is getting old but we are almost there...rambling over.

1. We are close to returning to a top 25 program faster than we think
2. Recruiting matters
3. Well conditioned team
4. Jones and his staff were dealt a tough circumstance when they took the job and never has thrown his player under the bus or ran away from the glaring holes
5. Go BIG F..ing Orange

Really good summary IMO. After watching our team last night, I actually think we have a shot against FL, SC, GA, Ole Miss, and Mizzu. I think we can get to 7 wins this year.

Agreed and half were playing high school ball last year. Give them a year or two in the program! Whoa, watch out!

def is better
punt return the same
ko return the same
punting worse
ko about the/same
qb better
rb as a group about the same at this point
wr better but not back to wr u
oline is worse at this point
off play calling still needs to grow up to big boy football.. fact the/read option is useless without qb running.
team attitude is better

so 4 better than last yr, 4 the same, 2 worse and 1 correctable in play calling but that we will have live with.

i still say a bowl game will happen

And the game was injury free for UT I do believe.

My takeaway...........is some one needs to be fired besides Sousa for NOT having the Band in Norman.
This is why he got fired for voicing his continued cutback of band involvement. Little thing, but it drives me crazy.....Cheek and Hart are idiots. :hi:

We got some very sore and bruised up players though.. Tough game...

Those are learning curve bumps, we're going to be a much better team due to opponents like Oklahoma.. It's going to be fun watching these young players grow into their roles.

Several of the Oklahoma fans asked why we didn't bring the band and were disappointed

Their fans were very classy. Dozens welcomed me and thanked me for coming before and after the game. Several asked Pat Summit was doing. Several said they could not to visit Knoxville next year

Even tho their defense really dominated most of the game, we actually had a couple shots. The blown fumble (which thier fans agreed should have been) and 2 ints in the end zone could have made it a much closer game late (pick 6 sealed the deal)
We had -11 yards rushing late and end up over 100 and that speaks volumes to our "never quit" attitude. I look for us to do well the rest of the year

Overall, considering Oklahoma's current state of their program, and Tennessee's current state, I was mostly proud of the effort last night. Except for one play. On the pick six, Worley stopped chasing the guy with the ball with a lot of field to the endzone. That does not speak of a "never quit" attitude.

My take.
Whorley put the ball where it needed to be, played very well.
OU got by with a lot of holding.
OU has a good team.
Our right tackle can not extend his arms.
Croom has to go get the ball.
Didn't think Hurd could be caught from behind (maybe slight angle)
Cam Sutton is awesome
Dee played well, got held on some key plays when the game was tighter.
Whorley not keeping the ball on the option ......guess we are saving that, or saving hm, not sure.

It's going to be tough to scheme with our O/line this year.

Lets get ready for UGA.
Go Vols!

I usually loath these kinds of "coulda woulda shoulda's," but I think in this case it will help bring some perspective in. To begin second half, Tennessee is down 20-10, and OU marches right down the field in a lapse on the defense that put them at 27-10. If they play like they did on all other drives it is still 20-10. Tennessee scores field goal and it is 20-13. Then, Tennessee connects on that one play deep in the redzone, and all of a sudden the game is tied with a real shot at Tennessee winning.

That is how close Tennessee was to really shocking the world and showing they are back. It didn't happen, obviously, but it's a far cry better then in the past where the team just came out after halftime, counting the minutes down until they could get on the bus and go home. They did not give up. They made mistakes, sure, and those cost them the game and padded OU's lead to insurmountable levels. But it really boiled down to those two in my mind. I have a feeling over the course of the year, those mistakes will become less and less likely. My only huge concern at this point is the Oline, and Worely's health as a result. Good lord that poor kid took a beating last night.

This was a loss plain and simple and a pretty ugly looking one at that. However, they were right in the thick of things, where before it was clearly game over well before the third quarter ended. That to me, keeps me optimistic about the future.

On the road home, so haven't had a chance to watch the game again, I did notice a lot of stunting on the right side over the freshmen Robertson and Thomas. They were confused briefly rather than react. Several times we had 5 true freshmen on the field at the same time. You can't expect favorable outcomes every time with that much inexperience, but they fought and kept their heads up. We will surprise people, and am feeling much better about our future than I should after a 24 point loss.

Worley is a 4.7-4.9 guy who was chasing a 4.3-4.4 guy who had a ten yard lead on him. I was surprised that Worley could even walk on the field in the 4th quarter. Where were the WRIn the chase??????

This is one of the most level-headed, sensible collection of posts I've read on VN in a long time. Just like the team is growing and maturing with each game, so too are the posters on here. I'm proud of everyone. Enough sunshine. As you were.

North crossed the goal line right on his heels, worley got blocked out and had no chance at that point why waste what little gas he had left.

I'm not a football x's & o's guy, but that TEAM last night was so far and away better than last year's team. I am encouraged that if a inexperienced team made up of Jones's recruits can play better than a experienced team of what he inherited, then we are right on track for continued improvement. More recruits are committed and when we take the field next year we will have about 70% of the team (or more) comprised of this staffs handpicked winners.

Rather than beat these guys (coaches & players) up for what they are not able to do I am going to look forward to what they can accomplish when they have a little more time to put the product on the field they want to put out there instead of the product that they are left no choice but to use.

GBO!
