I haven’t had a chance to post my thoughts yet, as I went to the game, then left town to see our daughter. But we got back last night and I had a chance to watch Freak’s posted video of the game on YouTube. Thoughts:

-This was a solid start to the season. The offense was pretty vanilla in terms of play calling, but handled business for the most part. Given what Virginia is (or what we think Virginia is), it’s hard to take much from this game, BUT we do know that they had a solid front 7 last year and return most of them, so the Oline’s performance is very encouraging. And it’s hard not to get excited about the defense, especially the front 7, regardless of opponent.

-Regarding the defense, the speed and athleticism jump out. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Tennessee team fly around the field like that against ANY opponent. They didn’t look that fast and physical against Ball State or Bowling Green the last 2 years. And Virgina is better than either. But what was really impressive was that they weren’t just athletic…they were disciplined. Watch Pili. He came out of a blitz on a couple of plays to track a RB out of the backfield. Beasley and the safeties were disciplined when UVA countered blitzes with underneath screens…they sniffed it out. Walker replacing Pearce on UVA’s 4th down zone read so neither the QB or RB had anywhere to go…these were all heads ups plays and reflected outstanding coaching. The D has clearly taken a step forward…maybe 2. This might actually be a good defense.

-The secondary played pretty well. There were only about 3 passing plays of significant yardage…I think 2 of those came when UVA found a spot in the zone and 1 was when Jeudy-Lally got beat on his first play and the UVA WR made a diving catch (GJL wasn’t beat terribly, but he was beat). Virginia was 11/24 for 106 yards passing….this is spite of being down big. Yes, the fron 7 was a huge help, but given that UVA was playing from behind all day, to only give up stats like that…that’s a very good performance by the secondary. The only downside is no INTs….they came close on two that could have been caught, but would have been great plays.

-Watch Keenan Pili and Aaron Beasley specifically if you watch the replay. Those guys are studs. Pili is much faster and more athletic than I anticipated he would be.

-James Pearce, Tyler Baron, and Tyre West are gonna have big years on the DLine. Baron finally looks like he player he was supposed to be.

-On offense, it’s been discussed how the RBs played. They ran hard, hey ran with patience, vision, and they punished tacklers. They played really well. Dylan Sampson is very much a part of this rotation and probably the starter in 2024.

-As mentioned before, the Oline looked good against a good front 7. This was my biggest concern and I feel a lot better about it. I was watching the interior line and Karic/Lane both played well. Mays coming back will obviously help, but Lane is solid in his place. I think Karic probably solidified the LG spot. I think/hope Mincey can nail down the RT spot. He can be elite there. John Campbell was awesome at LT. Best LT we’ve had in years.

-There were three really bad plays by the line…the 4th down stop, he sack on Milton, and a holding call that brought back a nice completion to McCoy. The 4th down stop was largely the fault of Castles missing a block, but the line really got not push. The hold was on Campbell because he got lost on a stunt and by the time he recovered, was in bad position. The sack on Milton was the result of Crawford getting beat on a stunt. Obviously, there is some teachable film regarding stunt recognition.

-I really hope Heupel is correct about Ross being nervous his first game and getting better. I’m really not a fan of the rugby style kicking, but maybe the fact he can use both feet will make him a weapon after he figures it out. We heard all offseason that he can boom it. I wanna see that Saturday.

-The passing game between the first drive of the game and about mid 2nd quarter (Milton’s “Mini-slump”) is the closest thing to a disappointment in this game. The drop by Keyton still bugs me because Milton threw an absolute beauty. He HAS to catch that. Milton seemed to be off after that before settling back in and playing really well the rest of the game. I was hoping to see more from Thornton. Not that he played poorly, just that I was hoping to see him make some big plays. But again, we were vanilla.

-A few thoughts on Milton and that mini slump: 1) After the series when he had 3 straight incompletions, he seemed frustrated with himself. He came to the sideline and I LOVED Heupel’s handling of it. CJH was just calm. No emphatic words or Spurrieresque visor throwing…just a chat about what to do different. Milton settled down. THIS is the thing I love most about Heupel. His calmness and confidence bleeds into his team. They play like he acts. It’s why perceived “curses” don’t matter anymore. There is no pucker factor with CJH; 2) Milton made all the right reads and was very quick in his decision-making. Even during his mini slump, He was going through progressions quickly, getting the ball out quickly, and making the right reads. This isn’t a small thing. In fact, it was one of the big concerns Milton needed to address. He looks like he’s in complete command of this offense and knows where he’s going with the ball; 3) before anyone makes too much of the inaccurate throws during the little mini-slump, remember this…it was the first game. He settled in and displayed great accuracy after the nini-slump. And most imnportanly, every QB will miss throws. Hooker kept missing high in the first 2 games last year and at times in 2021. I remember typing in my thoughts after the Pitt game how that was a concern for me. But Hooker settled in, got used to his WRs, and had an historic season. Joe having a little mini slump in the first game is nothing to be concerned about, especially given the way he recovered.

-Man, we TOOK OVER Nissan Stadium. I know some hate neutral site games and say we shouldn’t play in Nashville, but I just don't agree. That’s a fun way to open the season and remind folks that Nashville IS Big Orange Country. Even though it wasn’t on campus, that’s the best environment UVA will play in all year. Also, get used to it. Once the new stadium is built in Nashville, they’re gonna put the Vols in there every few years. No doubt. And that stadium will be more fun, with all that’s going to be put around it, so you don’t have to cross the pedestrian bridge to downtown to do things. But hopefully, no more 11:00 kicks.

On to Austin Peay and the Condredge Holloway smokey grey game…

Fantastic write up. One question..I saw where you said Sampson would probably be the starter next season. Being Wright is a junior, are you assuming he will go pro after this season or do you think Sampson will pass him up? Just curious. Again great write. I agree on all counts.

I think playing in nashville is good and important, but wish the game presentation in that venue had been a little more polished. The PA was just absent for long stretches, replays were lacking in the stadium, and mis-timing the running through the T seemed like an inauspicious way to start the year. Just my two cents, still an awesome and fun day though.

Q for you NighthawkVol

Solid write up however, you really didn't talk much at all about our receivers. At the end of the year, who do you think we will look back upon as our top receiver?

Don't hate me, but this offense reminded me of Spurrier's Dink & Dunk.
If you rewatch you’ll see their DBs were regularly playing 8-10 yards deep. Which is why there were less deep shots and the run game/short passing game was open. Heupel is going to take what the defense will give. We do not run an air raid like a lot of media act like.

UVA's front 7 was good enough to expose some improvement areas. That may end up being the most important thing taken from this game going forward. I don't think you can read too much into the D. UVA is flat bad. But their D seemed intent in not getting beat over the top which indirectly put the burden on UT's OL to be consistent in the run game and short passing game. Lots of success but also some good teaching moments.

Maybe I am just getting old, but that was the least informative broadcast I can remember in a while. They never showed presnap alignments and infrequently identified substitutions and I had no idea who was on the field, especially on defense.

I was pleased after our bowl game that they did not locate their QB's parents seats and feature them during the broadcast.

Not surprised coach played the take what they give you game rather than trying to feature balance in the first game of the year. The receivers time will come when it makes sense. I guess we did not have to throw a bunch of deep balls to get them to defend that way so we did not. Bet we get some stop the run first games too.

I think this is true for several reasons. (1) We were vanilla on purpose (2) it was the first game and the passing game is still a work in progress (3) UVA kept in 2 high safety most of the game to keep down the long pass plays, so the offense took what the defense was giving.

Good write up OP. It seemed to me Virginia game planned on not getting beat deep because they’ve been hearing about Milton’s arm the whole offseason. We made them pay by running the ball and took everything they gave us. That’s what makes this team so dangerous, you’re not safe either way with an arm like Milton’s.

Well put. The thing people miss about Heupel’s offense — in contrast to true “gimmick” offenses — is that this offense doesn’t care how it moves the ball/scores, only that it does so. Heupel and Halzle aren’t going to shed any tears if we aren’t throwing 70 yard td passes all game if we’re gashing people with 10 and 12 yard runs over and over. If and when defenses start coming up to stop the run, we’ll start seeing the long pass plays.

It may work even better if opposing Ds try to force UT to run and throw short. A stat I can't remember anyone talking about was what this strategy did to UVA. UT ran 85 plays. UVA ran 64. UVA's D had to stand up to 85 plays with UT in control of the tempo. I believe most were in the first half. I think you almost have to take risks and hope your O can keep up.

Yes, I think Wright is gone next year. Thanks.

I said in the OP that I thought Karic looked solid, but the guys on 247 disagreed. I should place the caveat that he looked solid when I focused on him. I must've missed some times he didn't get a body on his man. As you say, the Virginia Dline is good enough to provide solid competition to our Oline and show us areas to improve.

Karic was in his first game in this offense and first in college as a Guard, so he should improve. But I thought Dayne Davis played well at Center when he got in there. Maybe they play Davis at Center against AP and start Lane at LG. I'm guessing Lane is the likely LG when Mays comes back anyway.

College Football News had Virginia ranked 65th in their preseason rankings. Their over/under for wins was set at 5.5. They aren't great, but they also aren't the worst P5 team in the nation. For reference, Vandy and Indiana were both ranked below them in those same rankings. Also worth noting: UVA had no turnovers against an aggressive defense and only 2 penalties for 10 yards. They may ultimately be a low tier bowl team in the ACC this year. I think it was a good first game performance for the Vols.

I'm not all that sure that the guys at 247 are any better at evaluating play than you are. Good job btw.

I'm rooting for them now. After what happened to Clemson... who knows what the ACC is going to look like this year?

Some good insight! The technique by the guys in the defensive backfield still has me a little confused, mainly how they still don't seem to turn for the ball. I know it's been discussed a good bit on here but it really does seem like maybe they're being coached to do that? I think we have a very good coaching staff so I'm just honestly curious about it and why they would do that. Seems like it would bring up more PI calls (which happened in the Clemson game several times) and almost guarantee no INT opportunities. But I'm not a college football coach, I just coach from my couch on Saturdays...
