I'd like to discuss matchups for this game. The most important ones IMHO are:

#1 Shaw vs typical UT defense
There's no secret UT struggles against mobile QBs, so much that even backups can look good against them. The question is, how much will he hurt them? If the defense doesn't show up SCjr could score on most of their drives because they also have a running game.

#2 Turnover battle
The interesting notes for both teams is that the Vols had nearly a TO free game last week after having turned it over several times (thank you, injured Peterman), while the Gamecocks have already had 10 yet Shaw has yet to throw a pick. What happens this Saturday is anyone's guess.

#3 How much better is SCjr's defense compared to UGA?
Because if they aren't a lot better, and if Worley plays a full game well instead of a half like last week, JW will have a season turning outing. I don't think their defense is very good or a whole lot better than Georgia's. What do you think?

#4 Old vs New coaching
Who makes the better calls this week? Was last week any indication of how well Jones and Co can coach?

#5 Special teams
I'll throw this one in because while duh, ST are important, can Palardy be Player of the Game with his FGs and punting? Who knows???

I'm on the Vol bandwagon this week.

Nailed it. Good analysis. Turnovers and stopping Shaw will be key.

Last year I sat in a jets pizza, a good distance away from TV that was playing the Tennessee-SC game. I have very bad eyes so I already had a hard time seeing the TV.

South Carolina was on the goal line about to score. I said out loud "I hope Sal Sunseri sees that Connor Shaw is about to run to the outside".

Connor Shaw ran to the outside at a moderate pace and walked untouched into the end zone.

The moral of the story: I saw, on a small screen which I could barely see, what Sal Sunseri couldn't see from the field. If we can play defense this year, we can win.

One other thing to keep in mind about this game is that USCjr gets back one of thier top WR (Shaq Ronald) who has been out for a 3 game suspension for violating team rules. Could spell trouble if he is game ready. Hopefully he is rusty and a non-factor.

Let's see what CBJ and Company do with JRM and Brent Brewer I think he may be used as a way to mitigate Shaw's scrambling ability.

We have to keep them to 3rd and long. Also need to get some speed in for obvious passing situations to spy for Shaw. To be honest we did good at keeping Murray in the pocket except for the one busted play.

I love this idea. I think Brent Brewer would be a great QB spy since he's a former safety turned linebacker

Good posts. I've given the coaches the benefit of the doubt as often as anyone, but I will really be upset if they don't put a spy on Shaw.

I was at the game and was screaming about an uncovered slot reciever midway through the third. Said reciever ran into the end zone and caught an easy pass for six, with a desperate safety still 3-4 steps away. It was pathetic. :banghead2:

I actually wonder if some bammer alumnus didn't pay Sunseri under the table to completely f___ us, lol.

Aaron Murray is no Connor Shaw running the ball. Murray has 78 yards rushing for the entire season and 57 yards was against us on one play. Yes we did contain him but he isn't a runner like Shaw.

Haven't watched sc a lot this year, my question is can our DL. Get pressure on shaw. Will Vereen have s breakout game with 2or 3 sacks or constant pressure on there qb?

There is no difference in this game or any other game on the schedule! If you get pressure to the qb making him uncomfortable you win the battle! Fulmers teams always got pressure, and we won lots of games!

USCjr could come out flat, as they did against Kentucky, but unless UT's defense shows up along with Worley having a good 4 quarters, this one may get ugly.

Stack the box. Make Shaw throw to beat you. I know he can pass, but if you let Davis and him run at all is going to be a long game.

There's a little more to both IMO

Better running game from their RB's? Shaw avg's over 50 ypg. Take him out and UT is getting significantly more from their RB's. If Lane returns in good shape then that makes UT a 2 RB team. I am aware that Wilds has played well at times but together Shaw and Davis account for almost 80% of their rushing yardage.

I don't see this as an advantage for the Vols but not really the disadvantage that you seem to think either. IMHO, this is why the return of Saulsberry (if it happens) plus the two additional CB's is pretty critical. UT needs to be able to put more speed on the field in the nickel.

You are going to take some shots but I agree. They are pretty young in the back 7 and have little depth anywhere on D.

This point though is highly dependent on how the Tiny vs Clowney battle goes. Clowney will be motivated. He whined last year that Tiny held him alot. He's going to want to win that battle big. Jones knows this... so that should give UT an advantage running the ball at Clowney- use his aggression to create large holes.

Me too. A football is an odd shaped thing that bounces funny... but I have thought this would be a winnable game since well before the season started and nothing has happened to make me feel any different.

It will be very interesting to see what type of game plan Butch has put together with an extra week to prepare, as this is where the very best coaches excel. If the Vols can somehow pull the upset, it will provide tremendous dividends for the future of the program.
Go Vols

It will be interesting to see the battle between UT's DL and USCjr's OL. McCullers and Saulsberry need to disrupt the middle and dominate the line of scrimmage to disrupt the SC run game
