that was successful, where the coach didn't have close ties to the University?

Think about that for a little while guys. What conclusions can one draw from that?

At this point, hire Fulmer if he can bring Chavis with him. We as fans are screwed at this point. To me, this is absolutely rock bottom. I can't comprehend how this got to this situation. I'm 100% dumbfounded.

I'm not saying you have to hire a guy that wore the orange jersey. I'm just saying we need to really take a deep breath and consider what it is that we have here. Like Gruden has said, this is a special place. Ainge said the same thing this morning. Part of what makes it special is the fans but that is the same thing that makes it a more difficult job.

We really have to ask ourselves what we offer. I'm not saying we offer very little. Quite the opposite. We offer a whole lot but the reality is that this position is different and I know alot of people don't want to face that fact.

Dickey didn't have ties and was a good coach
Battle had ties if you consider he was an assistant coach here for 3-4 years
Majors had ties
Fulmer had ties
Kiffin didn't have ties
Dooley didn't have ties

Basically your saying Kiffin and Dooley didn't work out. We have only had 6 head coaches in 48 years and one of those only lasted one year. That's not bad and much better then the perception.

I would be all for hiring a Tennessee guy if there was one ready and/or available besides Fulmer. Chavis has never really wanted to be a head coach.

At this point I am fine with Phil. He needs to bring in a ace recruiting staff though.

Robert Neyland

Neyland was an assistant the year before he became a head coach.

I'm not making any definitive conclusions. All i'm saying is take a look at the past. We haven't gone out and stolen a coach that had no ties to this area that turned out well.

Reading the threads, I just wonder if any everyone believes that we are in a different time in college football or that we have always done it this way.

We haven't gone out and solen a coach period except for Kiffin and Dooley, and only Dooley can be sufficiently evaluated. You have no point here.

Sheep. Read what I was saying. I've already stated that as a fact. That is reality. What I'm saying is that many on this board need to reflect a little more on what this program is all about, where it came from, the way it's been done. Stop following the crowd and acting like this is a coaching job just like every other.

That's why I cannot get behind the rehiring of Fulmer; to me that's absolutely admitting we're fine with reliving our memories of the 90s. I in no way have any faith he can come close to what he did in his glory days. And just merely being better than Dooley is hardly anything to strive for. Dooley was probably the worst hire in UT history.

Doug Dickey was an assistant at Arkansas, with no previous ties, when he was hired. Did a pretty damn good job of turning the program around.

I'm sure most Vol fans would love to have a UT guy if there was one but other then Fulmer there's just not anyone else right now. Is there?

I'm not even saying that there is or that's what we need. I'm just saying that for the most part, that's what we have done. What makes people think that were gonna go out and land "big time name" without a connection? This program was built to success over the long haul, no wonder hire made it happen.

I believe the same thing will be true for our future.
