It depends on how you define pioneer I guess. I'd put Richard more into the category of helping the sport really take off, since he was the first somewhat national star in the sport.

well red byron won the first championship.

lee petty of course.

dale sr. is the only reason nascar is so big.

hell even r.j. reynolds could be a pioneer. they brought the big sponsorship to nascar.

1979 daytona 500. first 500 to be aired on t.v. and ended with a brawl in the grass between Donnie and Bobby Allison and Cale Yarborough.

and Espn and TNN brought racing to our homes every sunday in the still growing years.

Lee & Richard Petty-especially the latter
Dale Earnhardt, Sr.
Fireball Roberts
Fred Lorenzen
Bill France
The Allison's
Cale Yarborough

I named more than 5.

Too many others-I'd have to go back and check my NASCAR book with all the drivers. I'll come back and list some of the drivers later and see how many of them you remember.

Bill France Sr.-past/Brian France-current
R. J. Reynolds
STP and the Petty family
The Alabama Gang
The Wood Brothers

There are several others, but these are five groups that come to mind for me.
