Nashville - The New Music City

Didn't read the article, but Nashville has ALWAYS been Music City, USA, not Country Music City. Anyone who thinks otherwise has not spent a significant amount of time there. I grew up there, heavily involved in the music scene. I've probably been to more than 500 concerts in Nashville, not a single one of them country, western, or bluegrass.

A bunch of bloggers realized that Nashville has an awesome AND RIDICULOUSLY DIVERSE music scene, and now everyone thinks it just sprung up out of nowhere. False.

Agreed. I mean, really, Nashville's nickname has been Music City for how many years? It's completely possible and reasonable for someone to consider a different city (Austin, NYC, etc) to be the most important musical hub in the country, but Nashville's been a giant on the scene for an incredibly wide variety of genres for a number of years. By no means has it snuck up out of nowhere.

You mean Jack White didn't move there to become a country star?

I think most people who know music reasonably well know that there's more to Nashville than country music, although that's certainly the centerpiece.

Gibson is the first thing that comes to mind for me though.

The whole state of Tennessee has great music culture. Between Nashville and Memphis, there's a lot to offer.

As someone who has lived in Austin and Nashville, I feel spoiled having been surrounded by such great music in two great cities.

I haven't been to nearly that many but yes, I've been to my fair share of concerts the past 15-20 years, and not one has been country. Most of them have been hard rock/metal. And the Black Keys concert I was at last month was the most packed I've seen Bridgestone for a rock concert.

The problem with Nashville is Broadway...way too much cheap looking honky-tonk crap places line that road. Otherwise I really like downtown.

I definitely agree. I don't like the look of Broadway either, but I'm honestly fine with it. People understand now that Nashville has a lot to offer.

On another note, sorry about my condescending remark about hipsters. That wasn't fair.

Nashville has always been home to other music recording other than country music. Rock, R&B, and Gospel music has fared well in Nashville. Because of this, Nashville is home to the very best group of musicians in the United States. As result a new culture is developing and is about to overtake the known old culture of country music.

I had listened to an interview years before about Bob Dylan and his album "Nashville Skyline", which was recorded in Nashville, that said that the album was the first time that Dylan had used an electric guitar in one of his songs ("Lay Lady Lay") and to boot, the album that was supposed to be Dylan's immersion into country music.

Here is the next interesting story about this song. In an interview with Johnny Cash, Cash said that Dylan played the song first in a circle of singer-songwriters at Cash's house. Cash claimed that several other musicians also played their own new, unheard songs: Shel Silverstein played "A Boy Named Sue", Joni Mitchell played "Both Sides, Now", Graham Nash played "Marrakesh Express" and Kris Kristofferson played "Me and Bobby McGee".

More people outside of the area are realizing it. I despise country music. That said, live venues are everywhere and you can find jazz or blues right next door to country. The number of people that come here to record is really not even discussed anymore because its so commonplace.

Are there any bands actually from Nashville? One thing that I have always heard about Nashville is the local talent isn't that great. Not sure if it is true or not. Maybe you guys can answer.

they all become local when they move here. You never really know where they are from, but you seldom hear a live venue with a band that sucks. Especially singers. The singers are incredible, even in the middle of the week. Tootsie's in the airport has live music everyday. I haven't seen that anywhere else.

I listen to Lithium, Alt Nation, XL Backspin, Blues, Jazz and a little Octane--all on satellite radio or alternative music channels on Comcast cable. Music is always playing in our cars and home.

Going to the Allman Bros at the Ryman on the 28th and to Muse in September at the Arena.

All that said, if you haven't been buzzed and on the main floor of one of those live venues late night at one of the country spots, you are missing out. The women are ridiculous. Last time I went, it was @ 1 AM at Tootsies and you hear "MY NAME IS KIIIIID!" and kid rock is 10 feet in front of me on stage. The roof almost came off.

That is great. What he is doing for concert prices is great also, hopefully other acts will follow.

I think Panic is going to play the Ryman in September.

Where is Tootsies?

right across from the arena and a block from the Ryman. You should get tickets to Panic. Stay downtown. Walk to everything. Everyone should see a Ryman performance. I saw Coldplay and Lenny Kravitz. Both shows were incredible. Coldplay does stadium shows now and the Ryman is an old church auditorium, so it's not big. The acoustics are legendary.
