then they should not be allowed to try and tackle the returner. Either tell them to sit down or run directly to the sidelines

Given that "defenseless" only means that they can not take a hit above the shoulders (e.g. to the helmet), I don't really see it as that big of a deal on the field. If the rule change helps prevent a few concussions then it's fine with me... I'm not aware of too many players that get blocked above the shoulders.

Hmmm.. Just QB? Get confusing when a QB lineup at wideout and someone else takes the direct snap.

then why not make it apply to every player? If this type of block leads to more concussions then the goal should be to protect all of them

The funny thing is there are a lot of 6'4" 235lb qb's walking around. That's a pretty defenseless dude

agree.. it should apply to every player. those type of hits/blocks leads to concussions and the ncaa claims they care about their student athletes or so they say in the latest lawsuit they are having to fight regarding concussions.

I would be fine with that as well. As I said... I just don't see it really making that much of a difference because it just doesn't happen that often.

The reality is that Dial took a cheap shot at Murray and should have been penalized for unnecessary roughness... even without this new rule.

Key part of the rule is above the shoulders. I think the refs will be smart enough to figure it out.

I can almost see the point because there will be some looking to target the QB. Not like a lb would be looking to take out the tight end that's not involved in the pursuit of the ballhandler after the TO.

Amen. Nobody ever seems to mention that Murray was chasing the play and was angling toward the returner.

No, he wasn't. He was trotting along watching the play down the field.

You're only half right. Murray was heading toward the returner. He was only about ten yards away when he got hit. But he was simply trotting along and didn't give the appearance of someone who was committed to making a tackle.

So really, he made the worst decision he could make. He put himself in a position where it could reasonably be assumed that he was going to get involved in the play, and he wasn't paying attention and didn't protect himself.
