The NCAA is meeting later this week to potentially change the scholarship numbers. This would affect schools that lose players to the transfer portal (ie UT).

The proposal is to increase the 25 annual number a certain amount for the year determined by how many players the team loses that year to the portal. Part of the proposal is to make it immediate for the current recruiting class. I would hope that means the players lost this last transfer season (for our sake) but not sure.

This is a proposal I’ve been hoping for an needs to happen. Particularly for schools going through a coaching change. This is huge news with potentially major implications for us as soon as this year!

This definitely needs to happen.

Need some relief for sure. It is going to be tricky to deal with to not incentivize healthy programs from running kids off and them bailing into the portal. Don't know how to word that into a workable form.

Yea, I have some thoughts:
- Interview players/create checkbox on form: Players decision or School
- Cap #
- Some combination criteria of their production and class year (Freshman/Soph/Jr)
- Recruiting rating and/or PFF
- Transfer to P5, G5, Div 2, etc
- no replacement for walk-on of course

that's the only way it works... or the Bama's of the world will be handing out 10 gits every year and plucking whoever they want from the struggling teams

They said allow to fill to 85. In that scenario Saban can cut 10 scholarship players that will likely never play for him and then recruit 35 that year. Not cool
And TN could/would take ALL ten of those players and immediately boost their roster and those guys would play NOW! Who wouldn’t take that deal?

This would not help out teams like TN as much as some of you think it would. It would help the dominant teams become even more dominant.

I disagree! I believe it would help tremendously schools like TN and everyone else outside the top 10! Guys want to play, not be buried 3 deep when they are talented but have to wait two years! All the changes coming are = to free agency and it’s only going to accelerate so get used to it! All of these changes can only help Vols recover faster!

What? It would definitely help. With the transfer portal, anyone can load up. Think about all the 2’s at Bama, UGA, Clemson, etc. who don’t play. They could come here and start. You could fill up with 10 plus quality transfers a year. It would for sure help us.

I think it will have the opposite effect. Hope I am wrong.

We shall see. Oh I know it’s coming and I think college football will be much worse because of it.

Something interesting that I heard during the NU-UI game today is how teams who have numerous players stay for the extra year of eligibility due to COVID may have fewer scholarships to give due to the 85 limit. Since we have lost so many to the transfer portal, we may have ALOT of space to fill if the limit is raised in accordance with transfer loss. Heupel could potentially load-up this class with lots of good incoming talent, hopefully enough to inflate our recruiting rankings to a high spot. While those rankings are not indicative of on-field success, the perception that UT is recruiting better is good for future recruiting cycles.

No because teams at the top will just trim the fat and recruit more
Doesn’t really matter if the teams at the top trim the fat. They are loaded with players who would be starters elsewhere. They can and will only play so many. Those who don’t play early and transfer out can land at other good programs and make an immediate impact. I would suggest that a 4 star transferring out of Bama to a school like TN is more prepared to help than the 4 or 5 star guy who replaces him at Bama is ready to make an impact as a freshman. I think this would be a great thing for programs like TN who are trying to rebound.

Like every situation there will be a mix of types transferring out of the talent rich schools. I earlier posted that a kid should not be able to play against a team he ever received schollie money from, but would now add that transfer relief should only be given to the losing school IF the player transfers laterally or up. None if the kid is not picked up or moves down to continue his career. Don't know if any D1 school should satisfy the rule or if a P5 kid should not be replaced if he goes group of 5 or lower. This would protect kids from being culled to some extent yet allow `the under used or bad fit talented kids their shot elsewhere. Would be interesting to see where all the kids from your example Bama have ended up Heck I would like to see a list of our guys that hit the portal. We know where the 4-5 high profile guys went, what about the rest? Nobody should get relief for misses who may have been incentivized to go the portal route after a heart to heart with the staff.
