NCAA Open Jobs Thread

Auburn: Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is not expected to return, according to AL.com. Muschamp is in the mix for the South Carolina head coaching job or could possibly end up as an assistant at Georgia or Alabama. Keep in mind: Muschamp's $1 million buyout owed to the school went away after Auburn's regular season ended. He can now leave the school at no cost.

Western Kentucky: Regarding reports he’s in the mix for other head coaching jobs, Jeff Brohm told reporters, “I don’t talk about other jobs or rumors. I’m totally committed to this university and winning this football game (C-USA Championship). That’s what I have to say.”

Sonny Dykes: The Cal head coach has interviewed at Missouri and is in the mix at South Carolina and Virginia, according to Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde, who adds that Dykes has an extension from Cal on the table, but he has not signed it.

LSU: The Advocate has an inside look at LSU’s decision to keep Les Miles. The paper reports LSU and Jimbo Fisher’s representatives were in negotiations, but some big names and Governor Bobby Jindal supported Miles’ return and ended the split among school officials. The cost to dismiss Miles and hire Fisher would have been more than $30 million.

Possibly, but Gus is going into a make or break year. Pretty big gamble dumping one of the elite coordinators in the country.

Word is that Gus never hired Boom. It came from the AD. Not that Gus is firing him, but can't imagine the relationship was great if the HC didn't want him on staff to begin with. I've been in south AL all week for work and that's what's been said on local sports talk out of Dothan.

Not FBS..but D-II coach at Lenoir-Rhyne quit suddenly to take D-1 head job...I wonder if he got the Tennessee Tech job?

Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.): Head coach Ian Shields has resigned after two seasons leading the program. The school says Shields has accepted a head coaching job at an unannounced Division I program. Shields went 11-1 in 2014 and 6-5 this year

With all the major openings this year, I expected major moves. This has been extremely underwhelming.

Houston: Tom Herman has signed his new contract at Houston this morning, according to ESPN’s Travis Haney. It's a five-year deal worth $2.8 million annually with a $200,000 raise to the assistant salary pool, according to Sports Illustrated's Thayer Evans.

No kidding. The two biggest new hires with the most potential have been Mike Norvell and Scott Frost. And Fuente going to Va Tech has the most upside to it.

But all in all, it's been pretty ho-hum on the hiring trail.

He's holding out waiting (hoping) for a better gig since the big paying jobs are taken this year. I don't see anyone left at the moment paying what he's worth.

Texas maybe next year. LSU is a possibility. Who knows what other big name programs with a high salary cap will come open.

And adding, it's Mike Norvell for your initial post (no E on the end)

There's still hope for UVA, or at least I'm praying there is.

Think this is a mistake by ECU..McNeill is a good coach

East Carolina: Head coach Ruffin McNeill has been dismissed. McNeill went 42-34 in six seasons, including 5-7 this year. In two years in the AAC, ECU went 13-12 overall and 8-8 in the league. More coming on CoachingSearch.com.

Not seeing anything on the news about it. Rumors or good stuff?

Not many seem to know why but big name reporters are talking about it

When I see them this late I always think he was asked to make staff changes and gave them the finger in response

I wonder if Houston added a huge buyout to that new contract?

East Carolina head coach Ruffin McNeill has been relieved of duties, the program announced Friday.

“After delicate evaluation, the decision has been made to move our program in a different direction with new leadership,” Compher said in a statement. “We are appreciative of the hard work, dedication and contributions Coach McNeill and his staff have made to both East Carolina University and our community.”

McNeill went 42-34 in six seasons at East Carolina, peaking at a stretch that saw him go 26-13 with three straight bowl appearances from 2012-14. But the Pirates slipped to 5-7 this fall, which was enough for Compher to make a change.

Sources the move comes as a complete surprise to the staff.

You think a team like Texas or Alabama or Michigan (just three teams off the top of my head) cares about a buyout when they want something?

good point..wonder if he could also be thinking a Big-12 invite could be coming? I don't see it though..adding another Texas team doesn't help with TV revenue

Not in the TV market, but Memphis is somewhat attractive to the Big 12 in those regards. Plus it's a stepping stone for the WVU game. (never understood adding that team). But for balance, having two more teams would add the championship game back to the Big 12. So Houston could get the nod. But with the way they are playing, they might not either lol

Houston could and maybe should get an invite to a P5 conference. If the SEC ever went to 16 teams (unlikely) Houston could be an interesting proposition to break further into traditional Texas territory. Truth be told, I'd swap Vandy to the AAC in a heartbeat for Houston.
