NCAA settles lawsuit

Hope the plaintiff wins the whole case including pay for play. It's about time this farce of so-called amateur college football has its day of reckoning. It is professional sport and a huge business. Coaches are routinely paid seven figure salaries with a couple approaching eight. The NFL is culpable here as well. They are fat and happy to allow this to continue when they should be contributing to paying these athletes who entertain us, the fans. It should be minor league professional football.

Then they shouldn't get a free education on top of it. Simple.

Sadly, a lot of them- especially in the past- haven't gotten anything that qualifies as an education.

And that's their fault for not taking advantage of their situation. I don't have any sympathy for those that don't when on full scholarship like that.

Out of state cost of attendance at UT (as of 2015) is $46,752. That's what each of those players are getting paid. I think they'll survive their time at a university on that.

Sure their tuition is covered, but considering they (coaches/university) expect their lives to be involving football or school when do they have time to get a job to pay non school expenses? I am not saying they should get paid some crazy amount, but something similar to what they started doing which is covering 'actual cost" of attending school is fair. I think Tennessee has one of highest at like $7,000 iirc plus scholarship.

That number I posted is "cost of attendance", not just "tuition". That's room and board, books, fees, everything.

They don't "have" to live off campus, they don't have to do anything. There are ways to make extra spending money, ie online surveys, research groups, etc to get some money that don't take much time. They get a great deal. I'm sorry, but you won't convince me that they "need" to get anything more than they do.

Serious question, should coaches have about the salary of a professor?

What does the coaches' salaries have to do with whether or not the players get paid?

And it wouldn't break my heart if they did.

My issue is I, along with thousands of other students (though I definitely had it better than many because of my parents' help) had to work in order to pay for our schooling, housing, etc. We all do what we have to do to be able to get that education. There were more months than not where after my expenses I had maybe $12 to my name. That was college life. These athletes don't have to worry about paying for the things I did, so it's really not a big deal if they can't go out one week because they don't have the money. That was my life for 4 years. They'll get through it.

This is certainly a tangent question in some ways to the theme of the OP. However, your question, if I'm reading between the lines quickly centers around why a coach can get paid between $3M - $9M per year to coach what is supposed to be an amateur sport. Of course, that's a moot question because everyone knows that Power 5 college football is not an amateur sport. It is big business with gobs of revenue generated and cash thrown around. It's huge even for the cities like K-town with the motels/food industry/apparel/etc. I believe that the current model is unsustainable legally whether you agree with it or not. If these athletes are students first, then let's treat the sport as an amateur sport without the billions of $$$ flowing back and forth. Let's pay coaches a 1/10th or less of what they are currently getting for helping young men grow up to be mature adults who succeed in business, industry, medicine, law, etc. If we don't wish to do that, then by all means the NFL should be paying college players minor league salaries to play P5 football while providing entertainment value to fans, who pay lots of money for it. At least give a kid the option to either play for pay and forget the education, or go the scholarship route.

Why would they want to live off campus? They just built them a brand new dorm, that replaced one of the nicest dorms on campus. They have the best food of any dorm on campus and a nutritionist planning their meals. Anyone will give them a ride off campus and bring them back. They have an amazing study facility a block away.

Ps does this mean we'll get NCAA for PS4 anytime soon?
