No one has done more than Pat to promote and make women's basketball what is today. Also, Pat was a loud voice advocating the passage of Tittle IX, Which created more athletic opportunities for women in college sports and education. Brilliant idea, Woody!!
Well, it's just unrealistic to have a league-wide honor of someone who is still actually a coach. I doubt they named the Lombardi trophy while Vince was still on the sidelines. Think of all the named trophies. Lombardi, Heisman, the Stanley Cup. It's more meaningful to cement their legacy after they have moved on.
If you do it now, it's about the disease she's suffering. If you do it 5-10 years after she retires, it's about what she did for the sport.
I think this is a great idea. Just as Vince Lombardi set the standard in professional football (thus the Lombardi Trophy), Coach Summitt set the standard in women's college basketball.
