Christian Coleman had an excellent--but also frustrating--evening at the NCAA Track and Field Championship in Oregon. It looked like he'd won the 100M Final--but he got edged at the wire by an Arkansas runner out in Lane 7, where Coleman probably did not see him. Frustrating, because it looked like Coleman had the race. Did he let up a fraction, thinking he'd won? Hard to say--probably not. He ran a great race but got pipped in a photo finish.
Then, in the 200 meter Final, Coleman was again leading coming down the stretch--and then was again beaten by a big kick by the same Arkansas runner, whose name I forget, but who ended up winning three events for the razorbacks--the third being the long jump. He's the first collegian since the legendary Jesse Owens to win three events.
Great performance by Coleman, who's only a sophomore. His two 2nds gained the Vols 16 points in the standings.
Nathan Strother was in the Final of the 400M race--but he had a rough race and finished next to last.
The UT men finished a respectable 6th in the final standings. We need more depth--but the new coaching staff as the Vol track & field program back on track.
