I think that their gameplan was to put together long methodical drives and keep our offense off of the field. They would’ve been thrilled with a 20-19 game or something along those lines. The issue with that gameplan is that when you get behind a few scores, you have to start taking chances to keep up.

After we got them down by several scores, the rout was on.

There D was designed to not give up the big play. On offense they tried the quick short passing game. They were hoping by taking away the deep passing threat it would slow us down and we might make mistakes along the way. But our running game and underneath routes just gashed them to a slow death. Once they got down by 2 scores their offense was forced to try other things, and our D just overwhelmed them. GBO

You're absolutely right. While the passing gets the press, I think the key to beating that offense is stopping the run, and hope your corners are good enough to stay with the receivers. Easier said than done, and there are very few teams with the talent to do that... Georgia, maybe Bama, maybe Oklahoma.

What is more -- by playing this way against our offense (3-3-5 with a cover-3 look or whatever), NC State allowed our defense to rest.

This is how Stoops tries to beat us every year.

So far it's... not going great.

You saw the panic in their coaches faces when they got behind. Same type of panic you saw when Hooker was our quarterback, i.e. LSU and Kelly. They start making stupid mistakes and taking risks. They basically throw their game plan out the window.

A difference in talent was pretty obvious. Sampson getting to the corner before the DB could catch him on his TD run showed that.

In a post game interview, Banks mentioned their success on the opening drive dink and dunk passes were a result of some miscommunication between the LB's. After they got to the sideline and talked, the coaches cleaned that up and those passes weren't there the rest of the game.

This team is executing at a level that we're comfortable taking whatever a defense gives us. We're not making overthrows, bad routes, etc. If they want to drop back to prevent deep passes, fine.

We're also looking content with slowing things up and having longer drives with a lead, as we know we can grind 3-5 yards per play.
