I am building a pergola over our hot tub. I drilled 3/4" holes in patio slab and set 5/8" threaded rods through standoffs with Simpson epoxy. Then I drilled 3/4"x8" holes in one end of each of my 6x6's, got them positioned and shot some epoxy in the holes. The first one I tried to set only stopped abot an inch short. I tried beating it down with a sledge, but nope...took me half an hour to get the dang thing back off. I guess I injected too much epoxy.

So now my holes are all half or more filled with hardened epoxy. I guess I can just drill them back out. Question is, would I be ok drilling them out larger? An inch maybe? They're dripping wet/green and a little heavy to handle with just an eighth clearance.

Once set, they will have 7-8" of 5/8" rod in the center and 3 #9x1.5" structural connectors screwed into opposing sides through the standoffs. Add the weight of four 2x10x12's and ten 2x8x12's...and I'm pretty sure they aren't going anywhere, right?

Thanks...

till they crash on your head, while your enjoying some adult time in the Hot Tub...

I'm far from an expert, but I wouldn't drill them out larger than the bolts you have as studs in the concrete

The 6x6 posts will hold your weight but you have to get those plumb and secure. Anyway to take a picture where your drilling from about 5 or 6 feet away and post?

The weight of the pergola should be enough to hold it in place, especially if the other 3 are done right. I think you'll be ok drilling it out.

I'll have to see hot women in bikinis in the hot tub before I can render an opinion on the matter.

Today, I cut the rods to about 4" and set them. The standoffs are held down with the 5/8' rod in 3"+ of epoxy and shot two pins in each...they're not going anywhere with a half ton of lumber sitting on them.

The hole size didn't make much difference - must have over poured on the epoxy. Guess I was gassed late in the day and struggled controlling/handling the 6x6's by myself.

I'll post pix later...

Thanks and GBO!
