My wife knows I love historic things about my teams so she got me an old throw back Vols shirt and I’d never seen it before. All I can find is “1983.”

What’s the story behind this logo??

From the website that sells it, it is not associated with Tennessee (and the "T" is wrong, even for 1983) ... so it is nothing official from the University. It is most likely just some modern drawing that is in a throw-back style.

Their disclaimer: Vintage Brand® and its products are not affiliated with, licensed, sponsored, or endorsed by any college, university, professional team, league, event, or licensing entity. All designs are derived from actual historic works of art existing in the public domain.

It looks like they are just grabbing art off Google images, stylizing it for Tennessee fans, and then marketing products with it.

That is basically a cheap fake so as to avoid having to pay the licensing fees for using the correct "T" and Volunteer.

Kmart special, IMO. Or Heck I can't remember those stores from the 80's that went belly up. Eastgate in Chattanooga?
That was a mall. 1st one in Chattanooga. Finally collapsed when the new HP mall was built up I75. Some local stores dying were Hills, Sears, Proffitts. JCP is hanging on in the post brick/mortar era.
