The hype for Heupel is real,’’ Neuheisel told me in a one-on-one interview.I think he’s the coach of the year.

“Kirby Smart is going to get a lot of that attention because he deserves it. Because he has so many good players and you’ve got to remember, now, he got them all there. The recruiting job is part of the deal as well.

“But for Josh Heupel to come into the situation he found himself in and to deliver in the way he has delivered, not only wins and losses, but with the way the kids are playing and the way the fans have bought in, it is has been absolutely fun to watch the energy that has been at Neyland Stadium.

“The energy is back, the passion is back and he did it with a roster that had to be completely retooled in a very short period of time. So my hat’s off to him and the entire staff, and he’d get my vote for coach of the year in the SEC.’’

And this is amazing. I hadn't seen this number... 45 players lost?
Since the start of last season, UT has lost 45 players that could be on the roster: 39 transfers, two that retired for medical reasons, four that were let out of their National Letter of Intent.

And I know this has been debated here, but according to Hyams we have 77 players on scholarship. I think the previous lower numbers didn't include super seniors, maybe?
UT now has 77 on scholarship (counting super seniors).

I thought the difference was that some walk ons have been awarded scholarships. I thought I read somewhere that the original number was 71 and that a few players were awarded over the season. I may be wrong about that though. Or I could have read it on here in which case YMMV ;)

A lot of those 45 players would have never, ever played at UT. Don't get me wrong we had some significant losses, and have a big of depth problem as almost any other team, but we got talent also. We had it and these coaches did a pretty good job in the portal themselves. But when I look at our departures we only miss the OL, Linebackers and Grey (and or Chandler). I like our RBs, they have just been banged up and it would have been nice to have another veteran running back. Grey surely is regretting his decision.

I understand this take...but even the guys that never see the field have a role to play in making any team better. Numbers in practice are invaluable...

Everyone talks about us having 71 players but where are we when you subtract the guys who miss games with injuries?

Agree although I'm not quite sure that the top guys who left had a choice. Probably will never know that answer.

Good words here for CJH. He has outperformed. No question.
But, if Kirby brings Ga a natty, it’s gotta be him. It’s similar to Woodson over Manning.
