My mother in law has been having issues falling for the past year or so and finally got in to see a neurologist today. They said she had suffered 4 mini strokes in the past and that was causing a lot of the issues. She has an appointment next Monday and he requested her family (2 daughters) to attend it with their mom if at all possible. Is this normal? My wife is thinking the worse understandably but I'm thinking/hoping it's because my mother in law gets stuff messed up and confused some times. Was just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience or if this was fairly normal?

My only experience with mini strokes is with my mom. They eventually caused dementia and she died from a brain bleed after 6 years. I wouldn't worry about good or bad until you hear it from the Dr. BUT, it is an absolutely good thing that he is asking family to be there because having her try and translate when she gets out is not the right thing to do. Have them take notes, have him spell out conditions (literally spell) so you can look them up later.

My experience:
Families asked to come because the news effects the whole family. For example: someone has their driver's license revoked. Or, will need a full or part time caregiver. Stuff like that.
Another possibility is physician is concerned about her cognitive abilities and wants to make someone more "with it" is there to understand the findings/ prognosis.

Best wishes for all involved, Hoosier.

To have someone there so things don't get misconstrued or "forgotten" because of embarrassment or whatever your mother in law may fear like loosing her license if the Dr says she's not safe to drive. Went thru a fair amount with my dad and Alzheimers, even though my mom is fairly astute former banker that amount of info and "what ifs" is overwhelming.
hopefully everything went well for yall.
