Did UConn strike out this year or are they only targeting next year's class?
I know if Summit had not signed anyone highly ranked in a given year people would be saying the game had passed her by. Has the game passed Geno by?
I'm sure Uconn would like to have snagged another one or two recruits for next year. One of the problems with recruiting is when recruits see a team with a strong freshman class, they tend to commit elsewhere. In Uconn's case, last year they got #1 & #2 in the nation, plus #8 (I think). Anyone coming in next year will probably be looking at a lot of bench time. Recruits want to play right away.
UNC will probably have trouble recruiting next year because of their strong class coming in.
It's not a good idea to put too much stock in ranking numbers. Playing in High School doesn't always translate
in the college game. Look at Kelsey Bone for example. And Uconn's Kelly Faris was not highly rated coming out of HS, and she stands a good shot at being All American this year.
To me, our problem is that over the last four years, although we had highly rated players, they under performed. It is critical that this year's team and next years recruits exceed expectations, otherwise future recruits will start thinking coaching at Tennessee is lacking. So far Graves is a real bright spot and after the first game disaster, things have been looking up. That trend must continue.
Regarding Uconn, I do believe they will be gunning for a strong class next year. Geno's reputation is growing (much to our dismay). His 3 freshmen are performing well and all of his returning players improved greatly over the summer. With his Olympics exposure, his teams continued high functioning, he is getting the reputation of being able to develop his players to their full potential. If they continue to do well, they will be in position to attract a strong class in 2014. For some reason, the prevailing general opinion is that the 2013 class is lacking in comparison.
It is disappointing to read disparaging remarks on this board about other team's coaches. Calling someone a "tool" adds nothing of value to the conversation.Being critical in a rational manner is fine. There is no reason why we can't be respectful to all participants in this game we love.
