With Tebow's situation settled, it's time to focus on Mustain
December 14, 2005

Now that Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has decided to play his football in Gainesville, the hype and focus can now move to Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain, a name everyone in recruiting circles has heard a billion times over the last couple of weeks. Any five-star quarterback who hasn't picked a school by December or January is the subject of much attention, as we saw with the Tebow sweepstakes, and Mustain's recent wavering on a commitment to Arkansas has the media drooling.

When SportsCenter anchors are asking me where this Tebow kid is going the day of his announcement, the hype is pretty big; you can bet Mustain is next -- or is he? Mustain's de-commitment or re-commitment (I know, neither are really words outside of my line of business) from or to Arkansas could sound like a pop gun compared to the howitzer that was Tebow's announcement.

You see, Mitch Mustain doesn't like attention. Or, at least, he doesn't seem to. He doesn't like talking to reporters, he doesn't like reading about himself on the Internet and he doesn't like making a big deal of making his college choice. He talks to the media once here and there, usually when you least expect it, and "no comment" is the phrase of choice for both Mitch and his mom. Can you blame them? Absolutely not, although it makes my job tougher, especially since the "Where's Tim Tebow going?" questions will surely be replaced by "Where's Mitch Mustain going?"

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback from Springdale, Ark. told Houston Nutt last week that he wanted to look around some and keep the option of picking another school available. Tennessee will make a strong push, and it will likely come down to home vs. Knoxville in the end, but don't expect a lot of confetti and balloons when it happens. Heck, we can't even expect a comment from his head coach at Springdale, Gus Malzahn, because he's not allowed by NCAA rule to talk about Mustain now that he's been hired as the offensive coordinator at Arkansas (on merit I truly hope).

Just like the days when players would toss the football to the ref after scoring a touchdown instead of delivering it like a baby, this decision will be made quietly with little fanfare. Doncha just hate it?
