Per Rob Lewis (Volquest):

"It appears that there is a little movement in the asst. coach search. Texas A&M asst. coach Steve Forbes was in town on Tuesday to interview with coach Pearl and left town this afternoon.
He has been at A&M for two years and has also been a head coach at the junior college level. Forbes is originally from Iowa, so there may be some ties to Pearl there."

A quote on Forbes:

"I know that he was primarily responsible for A&M beating out TN for the big Lithuanian kid from Barton CC a while back. He has a rep as a recruiter, and has some ties to that Arkansas/Memphis/Mississippi area that I think Pearl would like to maintain a presence in."

This has not gone as well as I had hoped. However, UT has a #1 assistant in Tony Jones. High quality guys probably don't relish the idea of coming into a program as the #3 guy.

I get the idea that Pearl can't find anyone that he likes that fits in. Do you guys think that's the case or do you think people are not wanting to take the job?

I don't know about all of that hat. Pearl has said many times that he isn't in a hurry in hiring this assistant and won't hire one until he finds the right one. Maybe you're a little upset because he didn't hire who you wanted, maybe not. Either way, Pearl just hasn't found the right guy.

I'm sure people want the job. Pearl just hasn't found what he is looking for and I'm sure he has a specific criteria he is hiring on.

I think it's an attractive job. However, you come in down on the totem pole. For most quality candidates, being the third guy in line isn't an appealing option. Also, we have to remember that, fairly or not, the Illinois/NCAA incident rubbed a lot of coaches the wrong way. Coach Pearl probably doesn't have as deep a pool to pull from because of that.

They would come in as the 3, but I'm sure Pearl is letting each candidate know that Jones won't be here more than 2 more years and, more than likely, only 1 more. Not bad that, since at UT, his first 2 assistant coaches have went on to HC. This has to have an appeal to interviewees. I think Pearl may actually still be looking at Archibald and may be waiting for a few things to go through on him.

He's just begging for trouble with the 'AA if he hires Archibald.

Welp, Pearl doesn't seem to care much about controversy, so it really wouldn't surprise me.

I just don't see anything in Archibald's credentials that merit taking the risk of hiring him.

I don't know either, but he apparently does. Archibald was a good recruiter, but not sure how much of that was legit.

Randy Lambert from Maryville College would be an excellent pick for Pearl. He already can get some talent to tiny Maryville, so there is no limit to the recruiting success he could have at Tennessee. They met a few weeks ago, but no offer has been made, and with Archibald, it may not come. Yet Lambert is still an excellent choice.
