Lafayette High shortstop Andre Lipcius has parlayed a strong performance in the prestigious Perfect Game WWBA Underclass World Championship in October into a scholarship to play baseball for the University of Tennessee..
Lipcius, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound junior, batted .526 (10-for-19) with a double, triple, a home run and 11 runs scored in leading the Richmond Braves to second place out of 216 teams. He was named the MVP of the tournament.
"That's when I came on their radar," Lipcius said of the Volunteers. "It's still so unreal. I can't believe it."
Lipcius, who pitched a shutout to lead the Braves into the championship game in Fort Myers, Fla., said the Vols recruited him to play shortstop but might give him a look at pitcher.
"It's a load off of my shoulders knowing I have a place to go," Lipcius said.
Lipcius batted .339 with 23 RBI in leading Lafayette to the Bay Rivers District championship this past spring. He was selected to the All-Colonial Rivers Conference 24 and 3A East Region first teams.
