From Jayski:
RYR asked NASCAR to transfer the #38 to Hendrick for Dale Jr.: SPEED's Bob Dilner reported on Sunday's SPEED report that Robert Yates Racing has asked NASCAR if they could transfer the #38 to Hendrick Motorsports in 2008 for Dale Eanrhardt Jr. to use, the #3 in honor of his father, the late Dale Earnhardt, who ran the #3 [a few races in 1981 and then from 1984 until the 2001 Daytona 500 and won 6 of his 7 championships using #3] and the #8 of course is Dale Jr.'s car #8 since he came into the sport. No word what number David Gilliland would switch to, but RYR still has the license on the #28, last used in 2002 with Ricky Rudd and has used the #90 in the past.
AND: Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Monday that Robert Yates Racing and Hendrick Motorsports are discussing a transfer of that number for 2008. The #38 currently is being used by David Gilliland. No formal request has been made to the NASCAR, which has to ultimately approve the transfer. Officials at Hendrick Motor Sports, Robert Yates Racing and JR Motorsports could not be reached for comment. Should RYR give up #38, it still has the rights to the #28 that was last used in 2002 with Ricky Rudd.(ESPN.com)(8-27-2007)

i don't think the David Gilliland fans will mind too much seeing as how he doesn't have any.

This may be a stupid question but would that change the owner points any for next year. I guess it wouldn't would it, the 28 would get the 38s points and the 38 would get either the 5s owner points?

For the first 4 races though, that's how they determine how the go or go homers each week. That could be critical the first 4 weeks.

they should just take the #38 and make Gilliland run Busch until he proves somethin IMO

well I didnt know that about the owner points but surely theyll just switch them like you said

i didn't think you were allowed to, but then when Menard got the 13s owner points but that must have been due to the merger. I'm pretty sure I read where Nascar said they weren't going to let owners buy owner points from other teams.

not saying this bc im a Jr fan, but nascar isnt going to make Jr race his way into a race on time.... if he missed a race, ratings would drop

what would be the standard for 'proving something'?

Maybe running competitively in Busch. I know he was mostly driving Clay Andrews Racing, but other than winning at Kentucky he's proved nothing in the Busch. And he's defenitley proved nothing in cup.

a driver should have to win at least 5 Busch races before they are allowed to race in 1 Cup race :good!:

Marty Smith said on ESPN2's NASCAR Now that it is unlikely the #38 will be transferred from Yates to Hendrick

There's also been a lot of talk about the #88 changing hands, since Ricky Rudd is going to retire, but Yates ownes that # also!

this is pretty ridiculous but I figured all u Jr fans would appreciate it :)

The lowest Earnhardt can finish at Richmond is fifth to still have a chance at making the Chase. The two caveats to that scenario: He must also lead the most laps and Harvick has to finish 43rd. He can also finish fourth and lead one lap, or finish third and lead no laps and still qualify – as long as Harvick finishes last. On the other end of the spectrum, if Earnhardt wins Saturday night and leads the most laps, he’ll clinch a spot if Harvick finishes 33rd or worse OR if Kurt Busch finishes 37th or worse. If Earnhardt wins but doesn’t lead the most laps, he’ll need a Harvick finish of 34th or lower OR a Busch finish of 39th or lower.

now that was confusing, but im torn. Truex, Jr, and Harvick are fighting for that last spot and they're all my favorite drivers. I guess if it comes down to it and Busch will probably make it so I'll have to hope Truex misses. If it comes between Harvick and Jr i guess I'll go with Harvick.

i was hoping Truex or Boyer would miss. Truex because he thinks he's a mini Junior and Boyer because he hasn't done squat this year, like win. or wait, he hasn't won ever.
