For the military folks out there, the new Post 9/11 gi bill is expected to be signed on 4 July.

New points:

You will get FULL tuition and fees until you reach your cap (when I signed up in 03 it was like $47,000) instead of getting a monthly check. The VA will pay the school straight up so you don't mess with that part.

You will get E-5 BAH w/ dependents rate for where ever your school is. Now you don't have to worry about paying rent, and this doesn't come out of your GI money pool.

You get $1,000 a year for books and what not.

This is just amazing

well at least they are doing something. I know several people who have gone through medical, law, business school on the old GI bill way back in the day. It was a shame what it had been reduced to.

I'm just about to lose my eligibility for the National Guard GI bill that was part of my enlistment package back in 1985. $180/month for 36 months (4 nine month/academic year blocks). In August 1998 when I ETS'd, I had 10 years to use my final 9 months.

Even back then, the GI bill for regular Army was much better, but the soldiers did put $100/month into the fund for however many years of their initial 8 year enlistment they were full time.

Anyhow, this is a good deal for today's soldiers and I hope many of them take advantage of it.

I'm glad to see these improvements...I couldn't believe what the GI Bill had turned into (contrasted against what it was being marketed as). It's about time Congress did this.
