So what's the deal with this helmet rule that the NCAA has come up with? I'm watching the Georgia game and a player from Buffalo's helmet came off and he had to go sit out on the next play. Is this a safety issue? Sounds ridiculous.

If your helmet comes off you have to sit a play out. Also if you still try to participate in a play in which your helmet comes off, it's a 15 yard penalty. Yes, it's for safety.

The penalty (and possible time runoff) seem like overkill to me, given that they've been playing with helmets coming off since football started.

Safety issue, but it's also designed around making sure they actually fully strap on their helmets (rather than just half-a$$ing it and only doing like 2 of the 4 straps and stuff)

I doubt the penalty is called much unless someone is running like Witten down the sideline. NCSU lineman was, without helmet, on the ground holding AJ's leg last night as he was going after Glennon.

More of a lawsuit issue because of concussions

I suspect this is really what it's about. The powers that be are getting scared because they see the rumblings about brain damage in NFL veterans and figure they got to do something in the name of safety to try to ward off what could be coming.

I've been watching now the last few days and it seems like players helmets are coming off all over the place and players have to sit a play... It looks more like people are neck tackling and really trying to knock helmets off to gain an advantage for a play... Thoughts???

I've thought the same thing. This a horrible rule and a case of the NCAA having too much time on their hands.

During one of those games, they put the rule on the screen, and it said something about the opponent choosing whether or not there would be a 10-second runoff late in a half. That looked like a mistake. Surely, a team cannot knock an opponent's helmet off and then get to decide to accept a time runoff. It seems like, if anything, the team whose player lost his helmet would decide between taking a timeout and taking the runoff.

It appears to me that far fewer helmets are coming off this year because of the new rule. In the last couple of years hardly a play passed without at least one helmet rolling on the field.

IMHO, the particulars of the rule (sit out a play, time run-off, loss of timeout) are certainly issues to be tweaked and worked on. However the basic premise is a good rule .

The team that is losing doesn't want the runoff so if the team whose player lost his helmet is the team that is winning there won't be a runoff. They will only run 10 seconds off if a team is trying to come back in the last mins to prevent what happened with us and UNC.

If there isn't a grey area open for the refs to make a on field decision then the rule is dumb. If your helmet comes off for any reason then you have to come out a play, then it sucks. Guys get their helmets ripped off all the time. I don't think that should warrant a trip to the sidelines.

If an opponent rips it off you don't have leave. IF it comes off because you don't like the padding around your ears so its to loose or you forgot to buckle the straps down you have to leave the field for one play. Its not that hard.

I wasn't familiar with the rule. That's why i was asking. Seems like Boyd's helmet got ripped off a couple of times last night and he went to the sidelines.

The situation I am concerned with is the losing team being on offense and having their helmet knocked off by a defender. And, then the winning team gets to force a 10-second runoff on them even if they have a timeout available.

Wear properly fitting helmets and its not an issue. If the an opponent actually rips a helmet off its a penalty so your scenario doesn't work.
