So now that a biotech company has found a way making stem cells without destroying embryos, what new reasons will the religious right come up with to oppose progress?

The new method works by taking an embryo at a very early stage of development and removing a single cell, which can be coaxed into spawning an embryonic stem cell line. With only one cell removed, the rest of the embryo retains its full potential for development.

If the procedure is truly as simple as it sounds and is proven to be safe, I don't think anyone will have a problem with it.

One wonders if this would have been developed so quickly had Bush not vetoed the embryonic stem cell research bill...

The objections are likely to come if this technique encourages the production of embryos for no other use than the harvesting of stem cells.

the method is not as cut and dry as the headlines are claiming it to be. I have already seen many quotes from members of the Catholic church saying it is not an acceptable solution. I for one think Bush is dead wrong on this issue.

Bush in no way prohibited embryonic stem cell research, he simply vetoed gov't funding of such programs. Also, "members of the Catholic Church" is pretty vague. That is like stating, I have alread seen many quotes from members of the United States of America. It is completely ambiguous. My thoughts on the stance maybe from Bishops/Cardinals/the Pontiff, would probably be related to the fact that the Bishops of the Catholic Church are and have been against artificial insemination. Therefore, they are against any egg donation whatsoever.

Where did I say Bush prohibited stem cell research? I said I thought he was wrong on this issue.

Sorry I was so vague, wasn't looking to start WW3. Just saying that this new method is nothing that is going to change the opinions of either side.

Specifically, why do you believe Bush was wrong to veto the bill?

It does change my opinion - but I've still got some thinking to do about the whole thing.

My concern all along is the intentional creation of human life for the sole purpose of harvesting "parts" -- particularly when the life is destroyed in the process.

This approach solves one of the problems but there's still the whole issue about creating embryo's just for harvesting - are the surviving embryo's really going to be used for anything else?

I don't think he wrong to veto the bill. Government funding is not needed, I just think he is wrong in his stance on the issue. I am happy he vetoed government funding for it, but disagree with his belief on the issue.
