Embattled coach Mike Locksley fired by New Mexico - ESPN

Locksley won two games in two-plus seasons, for a career record of 2-26. The Lobos dropped to 0-4 this season after losing to FCS Sam Houston State 48-45 on Saturday before an announced crowd of 16,313 at University Stadium in Albuquerque. It was the Lobos' smallest home crowd in almost 19 years.

Just before kickoff, a teenager who claimed to be a New Mexico football recruit was arrested for DWI in Locksley's vehicle.

I never thought Syracuse going with Greg Robinson could be topped as worst hire of the past decade...but Locksley just absolutely obliterated him.

Horrible winning percentage? Check.
Embarrasing losses to FCS schools? Check.
Declining attendance? Check.
Players/recruits in trouble with the law? Check.
Punching one of your assistant coaches? Check.

New Mexico is a rapidly growing state with a growing TV market, and UNM could have been a player in these Big XII discussions if Locksley hadn't napalmed the program. What a train wreck.

Kind of like a western version of the situation in Memphis, really.

FYP.

I read that at his first press conference he told the crowd that UNM would be so explosive offensively that they would have to "add another digit to the scoreboard." Since that time they've averaged under 15 points a game.

Thanks for the help...there were so many incidents under his watch that I missed the age discrimination and sexual harassment fiascos.

Yep...although Memphis' problems run all the way up the flagpole to the university president. They'll probably bring Locksley in for an interview after they're reluctantly forced to axe Porter.

Either way, these are two schools that could/should be attractive to an expanding BCS conference, and it looks like both will be left out in the cold again.

If Maryland wouldn't take Leach, then I doubt an SEC team will. Leach could be scary going back to Kentucky. But I think he would do good at New Mexico for a few years and then could get back to a BCS school. Texas Tech was not a powerhouse BCS school, so if he got run from there, I doubt he lands a gig at a better BCS school. It may require him taking a job like UNM. This could be a perfect situation because that program is at rock bottom and there is no where to go but up.

Mike Leach had one ten win season.

I honestly do not get the love for him. At all.
