New Rivals aritcle by Farrell

According to Farrell's new article - he doesn't see us staying in the top 25 unless we get Richardson, Clear, Couch, and a few other surprises. Sounds like he's been reading VN. I feel like Moore and LV have said this exact thing multiple times this passed week.

Link: Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Ask Mike: Tennessee losing ground

So pretty much he doesn't see us staying in the top 25 if we stop recruiting and just end up with the same class we have now. That is profound, Mike... BTW after the explanations of why Randolph, Williams, and Smith weren't 4 stars... I hope you take your donut eating talents to Bristol Connecticut.

Na he's crazy. Number 1, we will get Richardson, Clear, Couch, and a few others. Those three right there will give us 7 4*s at this very second. Last year, we only had 12 total and ended up in the Top 10 in recruiting. Number 2, if they were as good at their job as they think they are and actually do their job they will see we have at the very least 2 other 3*'s that should be 4*'s and that would give us 9 4*'s and that's not even including the others such as Smith who should be a 4*, etc. Number 3, who cares about rankings! It's very obvious that our 3*'s aren't your standard 3*'s. When you're having a hard time guessing just how many of our 3*'s could/should be 4*'s should tell you right there that our staff has a pretty good eye for talent and quite frankly that's the only thing that matters in the end.

The thing about most of our 3* commitments is that they are playing in some of the most rich football talent bases in America ( Ga, Fla, Ala. ect..) 3* kids in those states would be 4*s in other states.

Relax guys. Stars do not matter.

According to that article he thinks they do.

Why isn't Brian Randolph a 4 star?

Farrell: We haven't seen him this year and haven't seen any of his senior tapes.

Why isn't Jordan Williams a 4 star?

Rivals analyst: We haven't seen him play recently.

Why isn't Tom Smith a 4 star?

Rivals Analyst: He is very physical, a good runner, and is ready to play right now in college football. Only knock on him is top end speed. So wait, he has good vision, great power and strength, and is a good runner but because he doesn't have "top end speed" we are going to rate him a 3 star under people that have top end speed but possess none of the attributes they give to Tom Smith.

Kerbyson: Offers from USC and Florida

Justin Worley: Basically the same evaluation they gave Sam Bradford coming out of HS.

If he wants to tell us the players that are average that we have committed then do so; otherwise he needs to quit making himself look like all he does is eat donuts.

Until Tennessee starts winning again, they will never get the ranking or stars again. Combination of high profile recruits looking elsewhere, and not getting the benefit of the doubt with the talent they spot. It is what it is. Doesn't mean that we aren't landing some gems right now though.

...and yes, before it is brought up, I know Bama circa 2009 recruiting refutes this.

& please god dont let this thread turn into another stars argument like every other thread on this board. I'm getting tired of getting on here everyday & reading each thread & reading the same things abouts stars. It got old about 3 months ago.

This. Great point.

It only got old 3 months ago? You have a lot more patience than I.

I'm afraid that is inevitable. We have a lot of stargazers roaming the boards.

Meltdown of epic proportions if we don't finish inside the top 25. Farrell may need to seriously consider staying away from the booze if he honestly thinks we don't finish in the top 25. I'm sorry I don't have any inside info on recruits but there is no chance in hell Juda Parker and Andrew Power would be flat out told to look elsewhere if we weren't in good shape to upgrade there.

The problem with recruiting is that while the rankings are what the fans are looking at, filling needs is what the coaches are looking at, and their perspective is much more important for the longer term health and prosperity of our program.

Frankly, I could care less where rivals ranks our program, but even so, I would be shocked if we do not close out with virtually a completely 4 star or higher group of players -- not because we are looking for the star rankings, but because the players we are closing in on are all 4* players (with at least one 5* in the mix).

I would also note that with Rivals cutting back on how many 4-5*'s they give out, comparing the number of those type players in this year's class to previous years is inherently misleading. Finally, I think it is fair to say that Rivals has fallen a long way in the quality of their product, which is player and team rankings. For Farrell to say that we somehow have fallen down on our recruiting is the pot calling the kettle black -- there are a number of our recruits that they admit they have not even looked at this year.

The bottom line is the quality of the team that Dooley and company are able to put on the field over the next few years, and going through our list of commitments plus the ones we are in very good standing with at the moment, I am very excited at what Coach Dooley has done to date. The future is looking far better than at any time in the past 5-6 years or more.

Unfortunately, it almost sounds at times as if Farrell has an agenda. Some of his general comments and rationale for the ratings applied to a few recruits are becoming a bit comical.

Isn't Farrell a Bammer homer? Or maybe he's just an "elitist".

Rivals must be doing pretty good financially because it would seem like cutting back on stars, not reviewing as much film, and not hustling to replace a departed recruiting analyst in a talent rich area would tend to drive away subscribers and inhibit growth, just sayin'.

If it weren't for Hubbs and Fortenberry...

I agree with what he's saying....we do need to pull all the guys that are heavy leans right now and pull a few others that are interested by not leans...but I think doing those things lands us in the top 15...I think it takes alot less than that to stay in the top 25...

I have faith in this staff that they will do that but it's not a given a this point...

One thing to keep in mind is that Farell defintely does NOT have any sort of orange glasses on...I doubt he even knows how heavy Couch, Clear and Richardson are leaning to us right now...

Another thing to remember is that Farell wrote an article just a few weeks ago blasting this class (2nd most disappointing)...if he did a 180 and starting praising what we've got going on right now he'd look like an idiot

Ah, but instead of saying that the Vols might be trending upwwards with the huge Arnett commit, he just reiterates his original opinion. I don't think his stance on us right now makes any sense given the context and events that unrolled in recruiting the last week.

Excellent point - Just man up and give some credit where it's due. By NSD he'll probably short-change us for not getting into the top 10 if we end up 11 to 15...
