man, do the the cars look fast on the new surface. i would definately look for some new lap and qualifying records this weekend.

i have yet to hear any driver say anything bad about it yet.

thoughts?

What are the records for the restrictor plate era? They've screwed with the plates and everything else so much, it'd be hard to call something a record. Guess they can just go off the current package. No way they'll get into the 212mph range.

New pavement looks good, actually makes the track look more narrow, to me anyway.

yeah, i mostly meant we'll see speeds faster than we saw there for the spring race.

not really sure what the track record at Dega with the plate is, because everywhere i look, they have Elliot's 212 listed. it looks like the 48.20-70s the top 20 are running will def be faster than spring.

i don't expect many cautions on Sunday and i think with the new surface we may see some no tire green flags stops and definately a lot of two tire stops.

Ah, gotcha.

Saw an interview with Elliott Sadler, and he thinks the packs will be even tighter than usual at Talladega. With all of the grip out there, everyone will be handling well. I'd think as the race goes along it'll get slicker and could start causing problems with everyone right on top of each other.

At any rate, can't wait to see it.

the 01 did 195.472 in May during practice. today, 32 guys were faster than that, out of 47 on the track today, i believe.

May's pole speed was 188.511, and that was the 38.

i kinda wish i hadn't passed on tickets to go down there. i woulda been unable to watch the UT game though if i went.

Should be in for a good race on Sunday, it looks so much better and faster than it did in May, it should be interesting, had a lot of grip in it yesterday....Will make for a fast track, I can't wait

well, scratch that. new plates on the carbs today. 7/8 instead of 15/16 or whatever they were.

lol. watch'em not be able to pass now.

7/8 sounds like what they had back in 2000... just horrible.

from NASCAR.com

NASCAR began mandating restrictor plates in 1989, and Bill Elliott set the restrictor-plate qualifying mark with a lap of 199.388 mph in May 1990.

there's the answer we were looking for.

Ah, they won't get close to that, especially now with the new, smaller plates. Just gonna bog the engines down even more.

Ugh... visions of the 2000 Daytona races running through my head.

honestly, i don't think they would have gotten close to that today without the plate change anyway.

and i agree, i see the 2000 Daytona 500 tommorow as well. i hate how NASCAR changes the rules as they play. it's my biggest complaint with them, but they do what they gota do i guess.

I retract my previous statement....Tid, let's just hope our boy in the Bud car does good today....He lookedgood in practice but with these new plates who knows how they'll race

Yeaah, I'm not expecting much. Just stay out of trouble (lot easier said than done here) and try to be in the right line at the right time. Those Hendrick cars still look stout and they start out front.

Just hope the race is sorta close to the way it was in the Spring. It won't be since theyr'e going too fast for NASCAR's taste, albeit only a few mph faster than in the Spring race. Just let'em race, geez.

Early in the race DJ was at 199mph with the 24 behind him.A good drafting line, they could break the 200mph barrier.:dance2:
