Howdy folks, I'm very impressed by this board. I'm planning on moving down to Memphis from Michigan for a new job. What's the word on Memphis? Any cool places to live/check out??? Thanks in advance! :good:

Mid-town is NOT Memphis!

[/quote]
Sorry, mid-town is kinda dumpy, and that's their little slogan "Mid-Town IS Memphis" If You are looking as far out as Oakland, DO NOT, I repeat, DO ;) NOT speed!

Nowhere but Germantown

I spent 4 years there (during med school). I lived in Cordova -- it's kind of the new part of town out east. Nice, but quickly turning into one big strip mall. Germantown is the "old money," and has the TPC if you're into golf. Both areas are quite safe and have lots of restaurants/shops/etc.

Mud Island is kind of "coastal" feeling -- apartments, condos, and narrow homes. Close to downtown, but quite a bit of crime AND you're right across the river from West Memphis (aka the part of hell that even hell didn't want). Midtown is OK, mostly older houses, and you pay for proximity. Quite a few trendy restaurants and bars. Again, crime is an issue.

Downtown has undergone major renovation and is less dumpy than it used to be. The area near the Baseball Stadium and down toward Beale has largely been renovated. You can find plenty of nightlife in that direction. Don't forget to try the Rendezvous for the best ribs in the universe.

Does this help?

Thanks! This does help a lot. Have any ideas where a younger crowd may live??? I'm pretty new out of college and I'll be looking to live in an area where I can find lots of people like myself. Young, single, and close to the excitement! I've mostly been looking at downtown and mud island, but I'm interested to hear any viewpoints from others.

The folks at Blues City Cafe on Beale may disagree with you, and so do I. But if you prefer dryrub, Rendezvous is your choice.
Plus, BCC also has great entertainment in the lower bar. If you haven't seen The Dempseys, you should.

As for "younger" areas (not sure how "young" you are. . . .), midtown is probably your best choice. There are a lot of rental houses and some decent apartments to choose from. You're close to good eating and some OK nightlife there. Beale is often older crowds, but don't miss Silky Sullivans for the dueling pianos.

I don't know, you might like mud island, but most of my friends that lived there moved away from the overpriced rent and car theft that allows only a short bridge jaunt to cross the state line. (Plus, I don't think Arkansas actually has a "police"squad). The real pain about the isle is that there is Nothing in the way of shopping or groceries except for an overpriced market, unless they have built recently. I really liked being in Cordova, but it is a little bit of a hike to go downtown. I also heard that they have built a lot of apartments in the renovated area of downtown. If you could get in there, you might be golden.
