how come?

is this not the way a portion of the country portrays him and his wife?

That portion is quite small (my guess would be single digit percentages). For the New Yorker to suggest that any significant number of Republicans view him this way is dishonest and insulting.

Everything I've heard about it is referring to "far right" or "right wing extremist" views, not "all Republicans" or "significant number of Republicans." I can understand you being defensive and feeling it's an attack on your party, the same way I get defensive when people lump me in with left-wing nuts b/c I say I'm going to vote Democrat. The fact is, we both should distance ourselves from lunacy, b/c lunacy sometimes affects public perception.

This election could be within single digits, so that's not insignificant IMO. In fact, it's a significant enough portion of the voting population for Fox News (and others, I'm sure) to report on at least some of these perceptions (Obama dressed in Muslim garb, he and Michelle fist-bumping as a terrorist act, e.g.).

Here's the editor's explanation for it:

This is interesting though, it shows the tightwire act any cartoonist or journalist will have to walk if Obama is elected and they choose to lampoon him. Heck, this guy wasn't even going after Obama here, he was going after people that are supposedly going after Obama. Obama seems to get into the victim role quite often.
