I have to respond twice to this guy. It is not nuclear science. Ok. It is football and a "greatly simplified defense" as well. It does not take "years" ok. Any of those guys who don't comprehend it now are not going to comprehend it next year or the year after that either.
Recruits have enough sense to know that this team is in rebuilding mode and those that choose to come here have a chance to rebuild our institution. There are strong relationships amongst these recruits and those that choose to bounce due to a loss didn't really want to be here to begin with. We have a top five class and I haven't seen a recruit decommit based on the Bama or Mizzou loss unless you know something I don't.I don't think it has much to do with how much "control" he has. Winning against Mizzou and the rest would have shown that this team has turned the corner, and we could easily have closed out our recruiting class with a few other key targets we have left on the board and likely a BIG fish, like Adoree Jackson or Garrett (5*).
That loss probably cost us a chance to land either of those guys or flip a big one late before NSD. But, winning out from here on could still communicate that the program is definitely turning the corner. Losing to Auburn and beating the last 2 to barely make a bowl game makes this team barely distinguishable from the Dooley led teams.
So, yeah...they are critical. I don't think anyone expected Butch to turn the program around over night, but recruits, like most of us fans expected to see some marked improvement. 6-6 means CBJ and staff have to rely on their salesmanship rather than results.
Amen brother (except maybe the "you fools" part). Talent is there, just poorly coached for the previous 3 seasons. If we dont beat Candy and KY then we're in trouble and the rest is just excuses. My hope was this staff could coach the talent we do have to their potential. Miller was the #1 DL player out of SC and a 4* prospect and top 10 line prospect. J. Smith the same coming out of TN. We all know about the herald of shade tree out of JUCO. AJ was a legit 4* Brewer as well. The line were all heralded. Lane and Neal were heralded. Worley Gatorade player of the year we kept hearing. People act like Jones has an empty cubbard and I just disagree.
Ok, now tell me why the Auburn coaching staff is doing so much better than ours this year.
We beat S Carolina, who beat Missouri. I can't explain it. But Auburn has played a relatively easy schedule, so there's that. Auburn will end up with 3 or 4 losses. They won't be a long term threat. They will beat us Saturday, but I like our long-term up-side more than theirs. Malzahn has a lot more talent to work with this year. But I'll take Butch. Malzahn can't recruit.

We're also starting a nearly all senior O-line and defensive front 7. How are they playing?
If you're waiting for us to have top talent and experience plus depth in every position in order to compete with the Missouris of the world, then I hate to break it to you, but it's not going to work out. No team outside of Alabama has the kind of depth and talent you folks seem to think Butch Jones needs to compete with teams like Missouri (who is playing mostly 3 star recruits).
Are the walk-ons really what's hurting us? Are they the only ones out there missing tackles, blowing coverages, getting stupid penalties, etc? No? Then why would a greater depth of scholarship players make that big of a difference when the scholarship players (often 4 star recruits) are making the same dumb mistakes?
I think part of the problem is that this group doesn't know how to handle success. We get a big win over USC and it's as if the whole team said "welp, that was the season right there fellas, let's take the rest of it off". Jones is trying to motivate these kids and I can tell by the quotes from practice he's seeing what I'm seeing, a group who got complacent. The question is can he get them re-focused, my money is on yes.
You're talking about changing a culture and mindset that has been filled with losing and attitude from former players. Where has that happened over night in a football program? These players have been conditioned to lose. Butch is not making up the statement that you have to have a championship mentality every minute of the day. He's not making up players creating their own momentum. Fans just don't like to here that talk and think its an excuse to justify losing. Losing is and always has been a disease and it takes new recruits who haven't been corrupted by the older players that are conditioned.
