I have been going to games since I was little (19 currently) and I got to see the glory days for UT football in the late 90s and early 2000s, I remember it really rocking in the 04 Florida game and being electric for 60 minutes, but now it gets quiet until the game is on the line in the final seconds. Will wins bring back the noise intensity or is it something that is gone due to an aging fan base?

It's a turn off for sure. I think when we start winning games it should come back. I hope so!

I can relate.

It was loud during the Florida game this year. At least for the first half...

I was talking about this the other day. Imagine what happens if we somehow won that game? ESPN on campus and people ready to start ranking us again. It's amazing how fickle perception and psyche in sports is.

As fans I just think we are tired of getting so high up for game and then get let down. Hopefully the future is bright. It's hard to keep screaming when your getting drilled. If disappointment was measured by sound neyland
would be the loudest by far over the last few years. Go vols

Neyland was a loud stadium until they put that Jumbotron in. Nothing kills the crowd like another commercial.

Neyland Stadium was one of the loudest in college football. Around 2005 we lost the intensity.
In the 90's there was a buzz at Neyland at every game. I go to games now and if you cheer loud or dare to stand up people seem annoyed and/or offended. Neyland used to be filled with fans who loved the Vols. Now many who show up only love winning and only cheer when things go the Vols way.
The change happened before Kiffin and Dooley. I believe complacency began surrounding the program around 2003. I believe Fulmer lost the drive for success and I believe both Kiffin and Dooley were hungry only for personal success.
So far CBJ has said all the right things. He has returned the focus to The University of Tennessee. Maybe this year the team and the fans will get fired up about being The University of Tennessee and Neyland will rock every week. Last year we lost so many close games, a rocking Neyland could have helped turn some of those L's into W's.

Scheduling teams like Austin Peay and South Alabama does not help the crowd noise either. In the 90's we played La. Tech. A friend of mine played for Tech and still talks about how loud Neyland was that day.

Went to the home game vs Auburn in 99 and we scored a pic 6 on the first play from scrimmage......loud as anything I can remember.

I have shoes older than you, and age vs. cheering are not at odds. I have been cheering the VOLS for many many years. I never BOO the opposition but I sure cheer for the boys. We 'oldies' are probably no longer knee stumbling drunk at games but we cheer when we should. When there is something to cheer about, both old and young will rock the stadium. Of course, I will still refuse to do the 'wave' as it is something for those not really interested in what is happening on the field IMO. GBO.

I've been to almost every SEC stadium for a UT game & even when Neyland isn't THAT loud, we're louder than almost everyone else. For them to have such a good tradition of winning, Bama is a morgue. Fla is probably the loudest besides us (and I hate giving them credit for anything.) Other than Tennessee, Ole Miss is the best place for a game. Went to GA last yr for the 1st time & it was a good atmosphere too.

It's funny what people remember. The OP said he was 19, I'm 35. I remember the mid 90's people criticizing for not being as loud as 107,000 fans should have been, and they were right. Does anybody remember the beach balls and the wave getting more attention then the top 10 teams that were on the field. That went away and we were as loud as 107,000 should be....for awhile. Then we dropped off, the fan base split over Fulmer and some people started showing up to boo the home team(ask J. Crompton). So far all signs are pointing to unity in the fan base and a real feeling of excitment around the program again. Not to say when we are 3-5 after the bama game that the negavols will rule the roost again, but for now I have hope and it's been awhile since I felt that way.

It's not like people used to scream at the top of their lungs during timeouts which is when the commercials run. And just about every stadium now has a jumbotron. Try again.

It's really not that hard to explain. Neyland has essentially been like a morgue for the last five years as a once-great program bled out over the "greensward" (a favorite John Wardism) of Shields-Watkins Field. As Butch breathes life back into the program, the mountain will begin to rumble again and Neyland will be transformed into the killing field of old. Winning is contagious. When every game begins to assume potential national championship repercussions, the Volunteer Nation will once again manifest the rabid support for which it is justifiably famous.

I've been to Neyland nine times (1994 thru 2010), and I've always said its not as consistently loud as it should be.

Based on my travels it's not as loud as The Swamp, Death Valley or Jordan-Hare. That said, Neyland is my favorite road trip in the SEC.

I think it was louder in 2004 than it was in 1998. Everyone was holding their breath in '98 until we missed that FG. 2004 was the loudest I've heard Neyland for a full 60 minutes.

The loudest I ever heard consistently was the 2004 Florida game.

But I still say the loudest I've ever heard it for a specific sequence was the 1994 Alabama game. Of course that was the last year in the long streak of losing to Alabama we had. At one point in the 3rd quarter, we took the lead and kicked off. It was already rocking pretty good but on the kickoff the Alabama guy caught the ball in the endzone, couldn't decide whether to down it or run it out and then at the last second he took off. He got to about the 10-12 yard line and got destroyed and Neyland erupted. Alabama went 3 and out and I swear each down it got louder and louder and 3rd down I was yelling at the top of my lungs and couldn't hear myself at all.

We of course lost that game but that sequence is one of my favorite Neyland memories.

Once these aging fans die off we will be back on top! *sarcasm*
