Since Butch arrived, I think that most Vol fans now know the seating capacity of Neyland is 102,455. I used to think I knew a piece of trivia by being able to cite the capacity of Neyland at the time. And I've been coming to games since the capacity was 57,122.

I have a question for VolNation. Somewhere along the way I have missed something. The all-time crowd was 109,061 for Florida 2004. The capacity of Neyland at the time was 104,079. And I recognize stadium improvements have been made since then that actually lowered the official capacity number to what it is now.

However in the last couple of years, I see capacity crowds identified as exactly 102,455 and no greater number. My question is this. Is there now a policy that a official count cannot be greater in number than the capacity, i.e., 102,455?

I have a feeling that if the number 102,455 can be exceeded, officially or not, it will be on Saturday. GBO!!

Per the State Fire Marshal you cant exceed the number of seating but yes there will be way more than 104,000 in Neyland!

Maybe they used to count every single person in the stadium all the way down to the concession workers, refs, mascots, etc :dunno:

Thanks Orange_Vol for the information.

I remember once the rationalization for a crowd larger than seating capacity was it reflected everyone in the stadium and not just those who were "seated" including concessions personnel, stadium support personnel, and even the football players, referees and coaches.

No problem but I remember back in the 99 season I was at a sellout and everyone was seated watching the game. Then you look around the stadium railings and there had to be thousands standing up along the railings watching the game too so without counting refs, concession workers or ushers you will have way more than the seating capacity.

A side note that explains some of this, a good friend of mine is a usher and can get people in free from time to time. So if all the ushers can do this thats the "standing room only" people along all the railings.

I have a vague memory of going to a game as a student back in the 80's with a SRO ticket. I assume they don't do that anymore

First of all, those past attendance numbers were completely made up. I know the 04 game was packed but there's no way there was 109K in attendance. They counted everyone within 5 blocks of the stadium. Most schools do it, so no big deal. Plus, I don't think they were issuing SRO's then, like they used to.

The upper and lower decks at Neyland hold somewhere around 97-98K. You can actually count the seats on UT's website (if you have the time). Then you have the skyboxes, press box, etc. to get to 102,455.

I think deerpark mentioned the fire marshall limiting the announced attendance at capacity. When you have that many people there's really no way to know exactly. Most venues now use the tickets distributed number as that's the easiest way to count it.

Hope everyone wears the right color! Trying to make a checkerboard pattern with 102,455 people (discount the opposing fans) is a logistical quandary.
