Nick Saban has issues with "no-huddle"

I thought this was really rich....

“There has to be some sense of fairness in terms of asking, ‘Is this what we want football to be?’” Saban said.

Pray tell little Nicky, is such a question appropriate given oversigning and medical redshirting guys?

While oversigning and cutting scholarships may not be against the rules, is that what we really want football to be?

To maintain the "spirit of the game" I'm sure Bama would be huddling up if they were down 7 with a minute to play on their own 20 with no timeouts.

Saban's comments were taken a bit out of context.

When the offense substitutes, the defense is supposed to be allowed to sub as well. During the Ole Miss game, Saban took issue with the amount of time that Bama's D was given to sub when OM's offense subbed. Basically saying that the sub allowance shouldn't be shortened because one team is going no-huddle. That's what he was referring to with his comments.

If it currently isn't against the rules, then Saban can go pound sand.

The refs aren't supposed to shorten the substitution allowance because the offense wants to go no-huddle. Substitution is substitution.

That's not really what's meant or is being talked about here.

He's talking about the new(er), after every play get right back up to the line of scrimmage for the next play so that (your team can continuously exploit that) not only is the defense unable to rest/catch their breath between plays, but that they also can't switch out any personnel on the field until play is actually stopped.

(It's kind of loophole-ish in practice, but the point pretty much is to 1 - wear out the defense by giving them no rest at all while on the field (renders depth a bit more useless in-game when you can't switch out your starters, all game, to rest...at least until they're tired/cramped) or perhaps more 2 - to exploit the the defense having the wrong personnel on the field --- to perhaps exaggerate a bit "what's that, you were in a nickel because the last play was 3rd and long, well we're running now, one of those DBs can try to be a LB" or "you were in a 4-3? Well we split out wide now...those LBs and DEs are just as good at covering deep spread, right")

College football is an evolving organisim. Even Saban can understand that. He just does not like it sounds like. Tough sh!t.

Nothing wrong with running the no-huddle in my mind. It is a great football strategy.

If the refs weren't giving the defense time to sub then that could be a problem, but if the offense is running to the LOS to snap it and the defense doesn't make an immediate effort to substitute, what do you expect the refs to do?

It doesn't matter if the offense is running to the line. If they subbed between plays, the ref is supposed to stand over the ball until the defense has a chance to sub.

Guess what? Having massively larger players than the other team and wearing them down with a punishing running game increases the chance of injury too.

If the rules are being used correctly then he's just whining. If the refs blew it v. Ole Miss then he should complain about the refs rather than opine about "what we want football to be" and hide behind player safety.

Ok...I wasn't really siding with him or his saying anything about player safety or injury; technically it's still allowed by how the rules are written and that's really the bottomline/reality with it.

I was mainly correcting whoever I quoted, who appeared to think that he was talking about teams running 2 minute drills.

Well, Saban is making a mountain out of mole hill but that's probably the point. My guess is people/the refs will take notice when he begins to raise a stink in games and he'll probably get his way.
