I post this on another board, but I thought it would be a nice read...........
---------------------------------------
Well, it was certainly an interesting week of college football. Here are my 10 thoughts/observations from Week 3......
1. I've never came away from a 10 point loss to a team feeling better about the Vols season. But this might have been the first time this has happened. Florida is still the best team in the country, but Tennessee's defensive gameplan had the Vols doing all that they possibly could to stop Florida, and it worked to a large degree. Problem is, the Vols have absolutely 0 passing threat with Jonathan Crompton at QB.
2. USC can't stop the curse of losing to at least 1 Pac-10 team each year. To be honest, I thought Washington would get destroyed, but USC, like they always do, plays down to the level of their opponent. It's becoming something that a Pete Carroll-led Trojan football team is known for. Don't get me wrong, I'd gladly switch Kiffin for Pete in an instant, but for some reason, they really can't deal with being a large favorite.
3. Maybe Washington really is that good. Hey, the Huskies played LSU to an 8 point game, even though that was more than likely a function of the Tigers having John Chavis as the defensive coordinator and them giving up multiple 3rd and long's. However, the Huskies earned this win. Congratulations to the Washington Huskies on an amazing effort.
4. Jahvid Best is now the Heisman frontrunner. 5 TD's? Are you kidding me? But that's just the kind of player that Best is; a homerun hitter with explosive speed. Seriously, he just might be the fastest player in all of major college football.
5. Maybe the hiring of Gene Chizik wasn't as infinitely stupid as I thought. Auburn is now 3-0, and even though they most likely won't contend for an SEC title this year, they're still playing like a different team than most thought they would.
6. Texas Tech is a lot better than people thought. This is kind of like my #1 thought; even though Tech lost by 10 to the Longhorns, they still looked like that they could be a nice team this year.
7. Down goes two of the expected BCS party-crashers. Wow, BYU was absolutely annihilated by Florida State at LaVell Edwards stadium. Florida State showed in the process that the Jacksonville State game was a fluke. The other BCS crasher, Utah, lost a tough game to Oregon in the Autzen Zoo, which I kind of thought was going to happen. It's not Utah was convincing in their wins, and Oregon had the offensive firepower to beat the Runnin' Utes. TCU, Boise State, and Houston are the last mid-majors who have a shot at the BCS.
8. Anyone who wants to know how to defend the flexbone triple-option should look no further than the gameplan that Miami unleashed on the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech. The Canes tackled the FB dive just about every play, and played their assignments exactly right.
9. Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor showed flashes of the QB he really should have been all along. Sure, most, including myself think of the young man as more of a scrambler(which he still is), but he showed a flash of what he should have been when it absolutely mattered.
10. Do Georgia and Arkansas play defense? Geez, almost 100 points scored in that affair in DW Reynolds Razorback Stadium last night? I must have been dreaming. It was like I was playing NCAA 10. Holy crap. I think Georgia, however, will be fine come their Eastern Division schedule. Arkansas, on the other hand, I'm not feeling the same way about.........
