Before Pat Dye was forced into retirement and Bama with Saban at the helm, SMU was the epitome of pay for play.
Sure Bama players of the old days were handed keys to Chargers left and right. Sure Pruitt crafted sleek Micky D’s bags to cover payments. Sure other coaches at other schools were paying players (see Ray Graves) but what most are forgetting is that even with large pay rolls, those teams still lost games. This is even more evident with the Shapiro scandal at Miami.
Even with higher payrolls to meet, those teams are still beatable and that goes back to SMU. I think they had the highest winning percentage of the early 80’s but, they were still beaten.
NIL isn’t the end all and having the highest payroll doesn’t necessarily equal National Championships. Does it help? Sure. Just like reloading with 5* players across the board but even those Bama teams got beat.
