NIL scams

Neither NIL nor sports gambling should have been allowed in. Greed can cause more harm than good. It is not money that is the problem, but the love of it that will bury sports.

But it's not greed for the Universities to profit immeasurably on the backs of these young athletes while preventing them from even making a buck off their own name?

There are many issues with the current NIL system. Athletes making money off of their popularity is not one of them.

Yeah, I don't want to call anyone out specifically on here, but there is some shady activity going on in Knoxville regarding NIL. I have worked with probably every group in town, and they're all still figuring things out.

and its not greed for the athletes to use the universities for a free education, free books, free lodging, & free food, while also using the universities equipment & training to help get them to the NFL?

Not saying that the athletes don’t deserve to be compensated, but anyone who thinks these athletes have it rough is delusional

I hear what you’re saying and do agree to an extent but I was busier in college with games, practice, and studying than I am now. These college athletes fully commit all their time to their sport and academics. Anyone else their age bringing as much value to the table as these guys do at big schools would be all ready getting paid millions, if they were in a different field or career. I think they should be compensated for what they bring to the table.

And greed can be very good. If it wasn’t for greed there probably wouldn’t be an NFL, college football on TV, bowl games, playoff system, Universities trying to outcompete each other in facilities, etc..

I'll throw in the Spyre Group. While not a 'scam', they are helping to kill college sports as we know it. NIL has been completely bastardized from the original intent.

Universities weren't stopping them, it was the NCAA.

Don't forget that all those athletes are free to choose a different field or career. No one is forcing them to play college athletics.

Student athletes are the prime selling point of a billion dollar business. If you think education and housing is fair compensation for the amount of money they bring in, you are out of your mind.

Maximizing profit in a free market economy is not greed

No it’s not greed. The money the university makes it pays back to the players big time. And it also helps many other areas of the university. Plus let’s not act like these players haven’t been making good money way before NIL. Because they have. I had a friend who was good friends with Travis Henry when he was at UT. Henry used to brag that he was getting thousands of dollars basically whenever he wanted.

NIL is already causing serious problems in college football and it’s only gonna get worse.

Lol no it doesn't. At least not in a way close to commensurate for the sort of money they bring in.

I'm sure players were making money before NIL. It most likely wasn't anywhere near what moat guys are getting now. You can't hide money when you're banking 6 figures.
