it's sad to think that there are people who actually believed Obama when he claimed that he would not raise taxes on the middle class.

Not to mention, Hoyer is talking of raising the age to get full benefits of Social Security again. Not that I expect it to be around when I hit 80 or 85, whatever it will be.

I think I'll go ask my boss for more money because I cannot control my spending.

they should absolutely raise the age for social security. they should also index it to cpi rather than wage growth.

i've advocated combining it with welfare for years now. my parents who paid in for 40 years don't think that's funny though.

That approach makes sense, although welfare is too bloated as well. And I completely understand about your parents. I think about what I could do with the money that is taken out for social security and invest it toward a real retirement.

the mistake made was assuming this was some sort of retirement plan. in reality it's a tax and will always be a tax. the problem is that we can't cut the current workers tax without screwing the people who paid in for years.

That sounds like a Madoff ponzi scheme. No way the government would set up that kind of system.

SSI is on a path to disasater. Unfortunately, anyone who suggests any real change to the program is demagogued to political death.

When the program was started, the earliest benefit age was one year older than the avg lifespan. There were well over 10 people paying in for each beneficiary. Seems like it is something like 6:1 now and according to our population trends is headed toward 3:1.

Simply said: it is unsustainable.

Sidenote: If SSI is not only legal but a "right"... then why is Bernie Maddoff in jail? It operates on exactly the same concept as a Ponzi Scheme.
