I made my first trip to Neyland this year for South Carolina. I wanted this game more than anything as a fan due to last year’s debacle. I had a great feeling about this game from the time I started driving towards Knoxville on Friday morning, I really wasn’t as worried as some.
I got to experience this game with my uncle and my two cousin-in-laws. We started tailgating around 8am and met some really cool people around us. We had your typical tailgate setup along with some burgers and dogs and of course, a lot of cold beer. We paced ourselves though and came out better for it lol.
We started our walk towards the stadium for the Vol Walk and the fellow Vol fans had a look on their faces, almost like they knew that this was Tennessee’s night no matter what. There was a lot of staring down going on. Vol fans were almost staring to intimidate SC fans that were headed to the stadium as well.
Inside of Neyland, the energy was cranking up as we headed towards kickoff. The Sterling intro was incredible. As soon as those lights went off, it was on!
Neyland was loud, but as I’ve seen some of you say, it wasn’t as loud as the past. I’ve heard it louder as well, but it was almost a perfect recipe to screw with SC. SC didn’t look very comfortable from the time they walked onto the field for warmups.
The Tennessee fans in my vicinity that we could hear were letting Beamer and Rattler have it the entire game and I think I saw Beamer even turn around one time.
As the ball was about to be teed up, two SC fans made their way in right beside us. I will say they were respectful the entire night and we had some general game conversations. They even turned around said they would be praying for Bru after his horrific injury. The Bru injury took a lot of air out of the stadium and I honestly don’t think the crowd ever recovered fully.
All and all, it was another successful outing at Neyland and it was as beautiful as always. As we made our way back to the sleeping quarters, we had almost been up a complete 24 hours. It was all worth it though and it is every time.
