Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

I haven't seen any Olympics aside fm a few clips. Not sure why I'm so uninterested. Looks like the 3 x 3 team is really face planting. Poor Hamby, as if she wasn't already losing enough w the Sparks.

Yeah, it's uncharacteristic for me to be so Meh about the Olympics, but that's where I am. I've watched a little bit of gymnastics and a little swimming, but really not much else. I'll probably get more into track and field events.

I remember reading that Hamby had never played 3 x 3 before becoming a last-minute replacement for the injured Brink, and the first thing I thought was, "The Olympics is NOT the place to go to learn a new sport." And then Howard was still not 100% after getting injured recently. They've got to be feeling pretty shook with starting 0-2. Yikes!

Actually I believe Hamby is the leading scorer and rebounder. Fm what I can gather, they're really suffering fm not having a rim protector like Brink would have been.

Would have been tough for her, but Howard probably should have given up her spot. She'd only played in one game before the Olympics and had been out a long time. Doesn't appear to be much of a factor.

I'm surprised that I'm having the exact opposite experience with the Olympics. First time medaling in women's rugby! Women's soccer swept their group, and the men are advancing for the first time in quite a while. Highest finish (silver) in mountain biking by a woman who trained exclusively in the Ozarks. Not to mention gymnastics! It's hard not to root for Suni Lee and Simone Biles.

USA women's Rugby team defeating Australia in the last second, is just a couple of notches below being one of the greatest American upsets in Olympic history. Of course the Winter Olympics when United States Hockey team defeated the Soviets.

Could care less. Our athletes are an embarrassment. Collins just made an ass out of herself on the clay again.
Collins, Gauff and Navarro...all on consecutive days. Like they all just tried to one-up each other to see who could be the sorest loser of the bunch. I expected as much from Collins, but was shocked at Gauff and Navarro's behavior.

Swiatek was and is going to take Gold in Tennis. Clay isn't the Americans best surface to begin with.

The American swimmers are in a rebuild mode but have been good enough to bring home Silver and Bronze. Gold is the one you want but to me winning any medal is a big accomplishment in the Olympics.

Can't be a LeDecky or Phelps like the last 4 Olympics. Katie won the 1500m race btw.

When Track&Field begins USA will win most of the medals.
Qinwen Zheng with probably the biggest upset of the year in knocking out Swiatek after entering the day 0-6 vs. her.

Iga will never get a chance like this again: no Sabalenka or Rybakina, playing on clay AT Roland Garros where she has dominated the last 4 years...real missed opportunity for her. Gold medal probably meant as much to her as any of the Slams.

Happy for Zheng, though. I hope she wins it all!

Women’s 3x3 has been a disaster. 0-3 with a loss to Azerbaijan (who has Tiffany Hayes for perspective).

Van Lith had no business being on that team. Don’t care what anyone says. Howard should have stepped aside as well, she did not get in enough reps after her injury and she has been terrible.

Hamby has played in a number of 3x3 tournaments. At least two players on the team have to be ranked in the top 10 for their country, and the other two have to be in the top 50 and/or have earned enough ranking points to even be eligible, which limited the pool of players that the USA could select for this Olympics. This list of options wasn't very inspiring:

Not sure if it's paywalled, but the Athletic had a good piece today about why the USA women's 3x3 team is struggling and what could be done to improve the team in the future. It seems like the best option might be to get college or recently graduated players on the team to play together for a couple of years prior to the Olympics so they can build chemistry since older and more elite players are going to put in the time to try to get on the 5x5 team.

Women's team is going to defeat a very game Belgium team. Without Breanna Stewart the USA takes a L.

Plus some very shady officiating for the Americans.🤔

Biles of course won gold and deserved to. The other gymnasts have an asterisk. No Russia makes that a much easier competition than usual.
The Russians do not currently have a healthy gymnast who could've challenged Andrade or Lee this year (based on their domestic scoring at Russian Championships). Melnikova (who also finished behind Lee and Andrade in Tokyo) is the only one who could come close, and she's injured.

Taurasi with 14 minutes and 0 points. Should not be there. Gray? 9 minutes, 0 points, 0 assists. Should not be there.

The selection committee did a terrible job. We will win gold because USA wbb is just that much deeper in general, but the composition of this team is embarrassing.

Yeah. I get it. No Caitlin … 🤣🤣🤣

Not even that. I could like about 6-7 other players that should be on that team instead of Taurasi, Gray and Griner.

Arike
Alisha Gray
Marina Mabrey
Chennedy Carter
Tierra McCowan
Rickea Jackson
Azura Stephens
More just being snarky … 😈
🤙🏼

…good on ya for not taking the bait!

PARIS -- The United States, Germany, Spain and Canada advanced to the semifinals in women's 3x3 basketball at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.

The defending champion U.S. team and Canada won play-in games Saturday night. The U.S. beat China 21-13, and Canada posted a 21-10 win over Australia.

Dearica Hamby had nine points and five rebounds to lead the U.S. It was the team's fifth straight victory after an 0-3 start to the tournament.

She went 3-for-3 on 2-pointers, and her last one closed it out with five seconds to play. Know-it-allBall09 was distraught at the steady improvement of the U.S. team. “They embarrassed me with three losses, so I wrote them off. This comeback was just humiliating for Debbie Downers like me,” he declared.
