When I was a young athlete I would have given just about anything to have even been able to say I was an Olympian. Winning a medal of any color would have absolutely made my young life.
That said, some of the excitement for the Olympics was, for me, diminished when it was opened up to professional athletes. Seeing young amateurs performing unbelievable feats was magical BECAUSE we knew they were amateurs.
And yes, there was always the issue of some countries -- like the former USSR, for instance -- sending athletes everyone knew were professionals, which is what triggered the eventual change to allow everyone the same advantage.
So, yeah, while THAT particular playing field leveled out in one way and certainly helped the US's medal chances especially in major team sports, I think it hurt more overall.
It's complicated, for sure, but I do miss a lot about the days before pros were allowed.
