I find it interesting how in some places there is strong support for all kinds of sports, and in other locations the population supports some sports and not others.I mean, let's not BS ourselves here: Syracuse WBB has zero history. They are not UConn, the LVs, South Carolina, etc. They were in the Big East 10 years and enjoyed a small part of the limelight (mostly thanks to bigger basketball schools), but that was then and this is now. You have to earn fans. Look, I get it, it's tough. God knows I have watched a decade+ of UConn football being absolute trash -- now they are enjoying a bit of an uptick but everyone involved is sitting there saying, we know we have to win people's respect, we know that fans want to see continued success, we're grateful to the people who do show up. That's exactly the proper kind of attitude to have. You're not owed anything, sorry to say.
Absolutely. It was just pettiness on the part of Coach Q, because let's be real, Stewart was never going to Cuse. She hardly slighted them. The city loves her; she's on a towering mural here in downtown with other local greats! Even the most casual sports fan here knows who she is. Imagine the Dome even filling to 50% capacity for her swan song season. Cuse WBB could have really parlayed that into excellence. My oldest daughter lives in Syracuse and both my granddaughters (10 & 8) play several sports. The university has (or at least had last year) several attractive ticket bundling options to encourage attendance for a number of sports, women’s basketball included, which my kids took advantage of. I feel bad that despite periodic success on the court, SU has never had a culture of supporting women’s basketball.
I think Syracuse women’s basketball, when they were coached by Hillsman, blew a great opportunity to try and expand their fan base by refusing to schedule a homecoming game with UConn when Stewart was on the team. If I recall correctly, Connecticut scheduled with Colgate instead and played to a sellout crowd, while the same night, the Orange drew about 350 fans for their game which was in the Carrier Dome. And if you’re never seen the Dome, it seats over 30,000.
In any event, I agree with IVOCD, I completely get the frustration but barking out loud like this won’t help matters.
Yep. Lived about 2 hours north of LA for a time and no one there cared about college basketball. Most people even had no clue about UCLA's storied history with men. Honestly most people did not even really care about college football. It was like night and day from the East Coast.L.A. is more of a Professional teams city. Dodgers, Lakers you can even throw in the Clippers as well.
Yes, UConn is a basketball state first, football is an afterthought. New England is like that in general, outside of pro sports. Personally I support all UConn sports because I am just a diehard fan. But in high school and college (MA), I never went to a single school football game.I find it interesting how in some places there is strong support for all kinds of sports, and in other locations the population supports some sports and not others.
I'm in my 70's and grew up in Connecticut. As a kid, I followed UConn men's basketball (not even sure if they had a woman's team when I was really young) and didn't pay any attention to Huskies football.
And while I'm glad to see that UConn football is doing better this season than in the past few years, the fact remains that Connecticut is just not a football state. (I played high school football and that version is popular but the state rules overseeing scholastic football don't make it easy for the state to develop strong homegrown talent. Relatively short seasons and when I was playing, there were no playoffs - that has now changed at least.)
Even during Edsall's first tenure when they went to the Fiesta Bowl and were briefly ranked in the Top Ten, I don't believe they ever sold out a home game.
And yes Maple, coaches are best off praising those who support their teams rather than bashing those who don't come.
Kinda surprised how well Oregon is doing.

If Auburn looked terrible and Oregon looked good then either Auburn isn't that bad or Oregon isn't that good. Oregon won by 2, 70-68.Graves is a good coach and always has been. Just got decimated by the portal after Sab was there. They had that one really good recruiting class because they all thought they were the next Ionescu but none of them were actually that good.
Taken time to rebuild after that mess.
I watched that game and thought they looked well balance. On the other hand I thought Auburn looked terrible. Couldn’t get anything going on offense except Scott shooting 3s. Blew a bunch of open layups.
Would face guard Scott and make it hard for her to catch. She plays off ball so I would just never let her get it back.
SC brought back all of their shooters and were one of the better 3 pt shooting teams in the nation last season. Yes, they have started off cold as hell this year however. Basketball shooting can sometimes be a fickle thing like golf, here one day gone the next. SC has the shanks currently. I’m somewhat of an expert on shanks myself.Women's Basketball Statistics - Southeastern Conference

Lady Vols has scored just 1 more point than Texas
Our defense is 2nd to last--- and yes it right in front of Arkansas that runs the same type of offense
9th in scoring Margin
7th in getting to the FT line but No. 2 behind Arkansas for FT%
12th in FG%
Dead last in FG%- Arkansas is in front of us.. same style of play
3pt% is worst than South Carolina and South Carolina cant shoot
3pt Defense is sitting No. 14
10th in Rebounding Offense
12th in Rebounding Defense
10th in Rebounding Margin
15th in Blocks
4th in Assists
1st in steals and 3rd in TO Margin
Neighbors has to be an awful coach. All of his players that transferred were sought after. Go figure. No way he survives after this season imo.
The Back 2 Sports guy breaks down the UCLA/SC game
My own thoughts on this game:
SC will need Fulwiley with her A game and PaoPao on fire from 3 to make it a game. I also think Staley would be smart to play a zone with Betts manning the post for the Bruins, but we all know Dawn never does that. I’m not sure who will be best at containing Gardner, she is unique and a hard player to defend. Likely Hall gets the chance first. Kitts needs Watkins playing a strong 5 so she can be a 4, she won’t do well against Betts when she has that assignment. I think SC has the better overall defense however, so maybe they find a way on the road, I’m not optimistic but who knows.
