Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

I think that's an unusual situation with the shortage of players.. UConn has their fair share of wings that have been with the program since the season started, so it seems unlikely that Saylor would be able to pick things up so quickly that she would leap over some of the other players.
Well, she has one skill that the other wings (other than Anna Makurat) has and that is three point shooting. I could see her getting 7-10 minutes. Certainly in the Big East blowout games.

True and Geno's read and react offense is tough to get. But she has a couple of edges in that she has a very high basketball IQ in that her parents are coaches and she brings a unique skill set that is in short supply at UConn right now. She can jump over the bottom 4 or 5 players pretty quickly and be a 7 in the typical rotation. It may come down to if she can get her defensive jobs tight enough.

UConn has 8 players that average over 10 min/game (Piath is behind the posts and then there's Autumn who isn't a rotation player). That leaves Mir McLean's 7 min/game up for grabs, unless she's going to take minutes from the top 8...and I don't see it happening.

Westbrook, Makurat, Bueckers and Williams are all capable outside scorers. Saylor hasn't played a single college game yet, so whether she's a good 3-pt shooter who's coming into the season late (and just started practicing with the team 10 or so games into the season) is TBD.

Like I said...I don't see her playing when Mir is probably ahead of her in the "readiness" chart. And if Mir did lose minutes to Saylor this year, I fully expect her to be apartment shopping somewhere other than Storrs next season (which she might anyway).

Minutes don't usually come from one player. She's not going to take all of Mir's minutes but she will get some with the loser being Autumn. Saylor may also take some minutes from Aubrey and if she can play defense some from Anna. Aubrey is fantastic in the open court and in man defense, but does not excel in the half court game. It might not be that difficult to match Aubrey's performance in the half court.

Remember too there are some blowouts coming where the guys averaging 30+ minutes a game will be down in the 25 minutes or so. That's another 15 to 20 minutes freed up. Geno will ease her in, but the minutes are there for a 2/3/4 player who can bomb on a team that is having trouble from deep.

Westbrook shoot s 35%. Williams and Makurat are at 33%. None are considered good at this time. They all have shot better in the past but not now. They are capable as you say, but they are not good. And UConn has played 6 games with 24 more to go.

Best game I can find today is Oklahoma State at West Virginia at 1 pm on ESPN plus probably watch leading into Tennessee men vs Vanderbilt.

Baylor/Iowa State should be a good one. Iowa State got them in the final game of the season last year.

And that should be a good rematch. WV played really well against Texas. If they can duplicate that they’ll even the score against OK State. Pretty similar team to Texas with Mack being the main option.

West Virginia is without Kysre Gondrezick(their leading scorer) vs Oklahoma State as she she has to bury her father today

Great execution by WV down the stretch here. Madison Smith may be small, but she be mighty. She has made several great plays here in the last couple minutes.

They are very tough at home. Looks like they are going to beat a good OKState team with a great Natasha Mack. And without the heart and soul of their team in Gondrezick. Great game for them. Making our OT loss mean less and less. OKState was 5-1 in conference 0.5 game back from Baylor.

I didn't realize how many HS seniors graduated early and joined their college team for 2nd semester. Should be interesting to see how many of these players contribute any meaningful minutes for their teams. Darius played 20 minutes and scored 8 points for UCLA in her second game.

Saylor Poffenbarger: UCONN, ESPN recruit ranking #30
Talia Von Oelhoffen: Oregon St, ESPN recruit ranking #25
Dominique Darius: UCLA, ESPN recruit ranking #26
Madison Conner: Arizona, ESPN recruit ranking #71
KN'isha Godfrey: Mississippi St, ESPN recruit ranking #40
Ally VanTimmeren: Boston College, ESPN recruit ranking #95
Katie Borowicz: Minnesota, ESPN recruit ranking #98
Jess Finney: Washington, ESPN recruit ranking #94
Izzo Zingaro: Iowa State, NR
Elise Williams: Wake Forrest, NR

Baylor hasn't played in two weeks, only had one practice and are missing Carrington and Bickle.

Iowa State hitting a lot of threes and are ahead 16-6 in the first quarter.

No. 6, 7, 11, 14, 15, 23, and 25 all lost.

And there are 15 more Top 25 teams in action today.

Could get crazy!!
I just wonder how much motivation there really is when the NCAA basically has already said if you opt out this year you get another year if you don’t opt out you get another year. Almost as if does this year really matter? No fans, no students on most campuses and very little social life. All this and more contributes to lackluster play all over the country.

Good points. Easy for us at home watching tv to pretend that nothing has changed...until we look around the stands and see big cutouts of dogs and Howdy Doody.

Life has been disrupted. Sociologists and physical therapists are going to be discussing the mental and physical toll of the pandemic for years to come.
