Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

Watching Baylor today, they do what we’ve been trying to do, way better than we’ve been doing it for a very long time.

As a Lady Vol fan you hate to have to use another team as a benchmark, but if our players could execute like that on both ends of the floor we would be unstoppable. They play inside out basketball to perfection. Getting your defense chasing all over with the pass and then score on you at the rim. Wide open...On the off chance they miss, the opposite forward/center is usually waiting on the other block for the oboard.

And hate on me if you want, but in terms of athleticism I felt we were about even this year with our starting 5 when Marta was healthy and coming along. DiDi Richards was visibly hobbled all season and STILL got the job done on both ends of the floor by desire and effort alone.

On the defensive end they command the boards as well. Both by positioning and boxing out. Coach Harper mentioned we needed to improve contact on the box out a few times this year. They also make teams very uncomfortable. They get in your space in the passing lane and they stay in your space straight up until you either A) give up the ball or B) force a shot.

That is ideal for numerous reasons, primarily it oft forces the shortest pass, which is the easier to steal because the defender is usually not helping and is in good defensive position. Eliminating floor space takes the cross court corner 3 out of the game. It’s almost not a thing against Baylor. Even Michigan with 9 3s made 0 from the corner. You cannot execute that pass well the way they defend and the off side defender can stay in better position and close out faster. We get burned by corner threes an awful lot it seems. Rennia got her fair share this season as well, but I’d say it was about even.

Baylor makes you feel rushed for 40 minutes (or 45 if it takes it) and it wears on teams. Sound like I’m fangirling, but it’s truly how I’d like to see us play. And is basically what Coach Harper’s eventual, extremely successful, teams will look like.

The best teams I have seen are Maryland and Stanford in the play thus far. Maryland has looked best of all like a WNBA team scoring at will.

Maryland has looked crazy good. Stanford has the poise and balance on both ends. Tara obvs not a fan of the officiating lol. A little politicking in the press trying to get some calls this weekend 😂

Didn't seem like it but Baylor shot 50 percent in this game. What made it close was them getting outscored on the three point line 27 to 9. If Baylor had shot 45 percent they would've lost the game. That is what three point shooting can do for a team if they can play at least some defense.

Lady vols fans calm down and stop complaining. The past is gone
Really? Thanks for the heads up. Who knew the past was gone?

FYI, posters on a sports fan forum do not calm down and do not stop complaining. And do not generally appreciate being told what not to post.

Back on planet Earth, Indiana putting a whuppin on NC State right now! Looking more and more like a quality win for us.

I really enjoyed the previous game, that's what March Madness should be. Sure was impressed with Michigan. What a well coached team. IMO UConn is the best team I've seen today. Baylor's a little ragged, though their D is off the charts.

I hope Gary Blair wins it all, the horrible reffing that got him advanced not withstanding.

I'm impressed with Arizona....watched them a few times on the PAC 12 network Arizona

Down to the wire! Indiana hanging on by 2. What a fun day of bball this has been. Lucky for me its poured rain all day and my honey do list is all inside things. Good excuse to watch wall to wall March Madness. Watching the men as well. Paradise!

We'll see if she plays like that when she is a junior or senior. Saying she isn't a great athlete makes you look dumb.

Never said she isn‘t a great athlete. Said she isn’t the athlete Hilman is. She can’t play like Hilman does, different skill set and different type of athleticism. Hilman is 6’2, agile, quick and has a big vertical.

Guess my remark earlier this season about the B1G was utterly incorrect. Michigan spanks the LV then nearly takes Baylor out and Indiana takes down a one seed. Plus Maryland has analysts Picking them to win. Made my picks with the principle of B1G is overrated. Looks like I’m buying in our dinner group

Gracious of you to say so. Will crow be on your dinner menu?

I think what happened to the Big 10 is those teams got better, are peaking at the right time. Truthfully, not to take the shine off our Indiana win, but they are a better team now than when we beat them. Michigan has steadily improved too. Someday maybe the LVs will do that again.

If South Carolina and Texas A & M win, we will have beaten 2 of the elite 8 and played 2 more very close. That's so weird bc I said and meant while watching the UConn game we were a country mile from these teams. We're at a stage where we occasionally play at the highest level, but not often enough nor sustained enough yet to be a serious threat.

And to those who argue you don't need high school All-Americans, just "your" players, to compete for titles I present NC State...

Really agree. The thing that showed flashes for me was our offense.
With Holly, (and I really do wish we didn’t harp on her all the time but here I go) I never really felt there was an offensive philosophy much less a playbook based on what defense we were seeing. It seemed to me we just tried to out athlete other teams. I am just a fan not a student of the game so I certainly could be wrong there.
This year, however, there seemed to be periods where we were moving, screening, passing to the open shooter and then crashing the boards when the shot went up. I felt like what I was seeing was what a mature Kellie offense would look like. So my question to the gurus on here is. Is that likely the system Kellie is installing? Does it take longer than a year to install a system? I ask this because we obviously were better but had not mastered it. Is this a horses for courses situation? So to fully implement will Kellie need a couple more recruiting classes?
Enjoyed seeing it whatever it was!

I like Tara, but it's really hard for me to bet on the coach who hasn't won the big one in nearly 30 years, when she's had plenty of teams good enough. Her title count should be a lot closer to Pat and Geno by this point. Maryland and UConn look legit. Nothing I've seen from Baylor leads me to believe they can win Monday. NC State was obviously a fraud and I would put A&M and Louisville in that category as well...

Man, you've touched on it there...I have not once this whole season seen a screen used (shoulder to shoulder) by a BH'er or driver...You see a screen set, then it goes to a slip-screen before it is ever utilized and if it is utilized you could drive a golf-cart between the user and the setter, thus it hardly affects the defender...I teach that when you want to run your defender into a screen, you touch shoulders with the screen-setter as you pass them so it makes the defender have to fight through the screen,,,,and if it is a slip screen you time it so the defender has to at least acknowledge that it IS THERE so that it benefits the user, bc, if you slip the screen too early it becomes a pure slip-n-roll and is useless
