Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Even without Fudd, DeBerry and Griifin, they still curb stomped a very good Creighton team. Edwards is playing at a completely different level compared to last season.

Creighton has zero post depth. They are out-rebounded by their opponents thus far this season. Once you get past Edwards and Juhasz, Connecticut shot 11-36 (.306) from the field, and 2-9 (.222) from the 3. Edwards and Juhasz scored 45 of their 72 pts and 38 of their 59 rebounds. CT started 4 of 5 players that were taller than Creighton's tallest players on their roster, which are at 6'-1"....

Watching Bama and UGA, at the half it’s been a clash of the same style. Both teams turning the other over but not much scoring. Very choppy play.

For Bama it’s all about the guards. They really don’t have much going on in the post at all. Nye, Davis and Barber can all shoot it. This Bama team has been on a win streak but haven’t played a decent team since mid-November.

Bama is slightly more passive this season preferring the 3 to driving the lane. Abrams, who has given us fits in the past, has a much reduced role. Seems to be working back from an injury, has gained some weight and is not the explosive rim runner she was last season.

Bama does the majority of their damage in transition. Really had a hard time getting anything in the half court against UGA defense. They rely on quick buckets in transition and aren’t afraid to shoot the transition 3. Have to get matched up before half court. Especially with Barber, as long as you stay matched up with her and prevent the catch in transition she’s a non-factor. She burned UGA on several transition 3s in the first half.

Rice is their center but she’s not much of a factor on either end. Only averages 6 pts and 3 rebs a game. She is foul prone and they have absolutely no backup in the post. If we can tag her with a couple Sarah Ashley Barker will be guarding our center and that just will not be sustainable for them. Our centers should have a field day. I think it could be a breakout game for Franklin.

Just don’t think this Bama team matches up well with us. We have the depth in the post to wear them thin and the size on the perimeter to bother them on both ends. Have to bust it back in transition and force them to play over our half court defense.

Our guard/forwards should have some very favorable matchups. That lineup of Powell, Horston, Jackson, Puckett, Hollingshed will be almost impossible for Bama to guard. 2 out of 3 of Horston, Jackson and Puckett will have a huge mismatch. We executed that well against Florida tonight. Will need to do more of the same against Alabama.

At different times against Florida our 3 big guard/forwards all bullied smaller players in the paint. Love to see it.

Clemson just beat Va Tech 64-59.

Jim

This is a head scratcher hmm VT beats TN then fall to Clemson ? SC beat Clemson by 54, Kitley 6-6 only 6 rebs. Coach K. Brooks may need to rethink what he doing, All 5 of his starters are playing 30+mis a game not sure if that will work in ACC play ?

Looks like LSU might be for real. UNC on the other hand is a competitive type team but definitely lacks the size and athleticism to be a top 10-12 team IMO.

I get it, but ARK sure didn't give them a game. Poff and Woff could nothing with Reese and if I remember correctly, did not provide significant offense. ARK is a different team this year. Actually, both teams showed me little as far as recognizable team offense.

I think Arkansas is a solid team but they are a different type of team this year, not as many pure shooters with the loss of Ramirez, but they have more players who can rebound adding Poff, Dauda, Wolf, etc. Which is probably one of the biggest surprises to me to see LSU just absolutely annihilate them on the boards. But Mulkey teams are always elite in the rebounding department. Flaujae had some mouth dropping moments on the boards, I remember her elevating and grabbing a ball so high up in the air over FOUR Arkansas players. I just think LSU was way too big and athletic for Arkansas to handle. They could never get many clean looks at the basket.

Personally, I think Wolfenbarger is not at a program who is a good fit for her type of play/skill set. But if she is happy there then good for her.

LSU shot the ball until they made it on way to many possessions. 33.8 percent for the game, Arkansas shoots 27.9 percent and got totally pounded on the boards 62 to 30. Plus 13 shot differential could have been a lot more if LSU doesn't commit 21 turnovers to Arkansas 14 to lower that deficit that could've been over 20. Arkansas needed to shoot 50 percent to win the game by four because of their bad rebounding. That with LSU still shooting 34 percent in the game. If LSU shoots 45 percent this game would've been far uglier for Arkansas than it was. Arkansas shoots 41 percent from the foul line just five of 12 so don't know what this means for them going forward, but if you can't rebound better than what they did in this game and also shoot this lousy your going to lose a lot in the SEC.

She was the number 7 ranked player in that class and she is playing like the 107th ranked player.

Not all players live up to their recruiting hype but with her size, she should be offering Arkansas much more inside. Although I do think she was banged up with an injury going into yesterdays game.

Arkansas has her on the perimeter a lot it seems. No offense but kids who are 6'5 shouldn't be that far away from the rim most of the game but thats how Arkansas plays, which is why I'm not convinced its a great fit for her.

I watched a few minutes of it last night was expecting a much bigger stronger player in Wolfenbarger to me she looks almost totally the same as last season. The way they play her is certainly surprising. For a 6'5" player she is not a very good rebounder even though 6 in 24 minutes last night is fair. You would want to get numbers like Reese out of a player that tall as Reese had 16 at 6'3"in 30 minutes.

Personally I don't think Neighbors is the type of coach who is great teaching rebounding, boxing out technique. He does a great job at other things but I don't think his teams have every been what I consider very good rebounding teams.

I bet you if Kim had her, she would be a significantly better rebounder. That is something they clearly work on and they exhibit great technique boxing out and timing their jumps to snag a lot of those boards.

Anyways, I will be interested to see how Arkansas rebounds moving forward after that demoralizing loss at home. Kentucky shouldn't be a difficult one to win as they aren't very good this year but on the road, you never know.

This Sunday and Monday's Games.

Tennessee over Bama, Going Arkansas over Kentucky neither team can rebound best shooting percentage wins, Florida over Texas A&M as long as Barker is not playing which could even it up a little still Florida, Vandy at LSU should be LSU by about 40. Missouri at Auburn think I will go with Auburn although they looked really bad versus Ole Miss, Ole Miss at Miss St is a tossup going to take the home team Miss St, SC at Ga another big Sc win by about 25 points.

Wolfenbarger is not and will never be an inside player. She's not strong or physical enough. She's probably best suited to play at the wing. Problem is that she's supposed to be a great shooter, but she hasn't shown that either. Poffenbarger is similarly sized but has been a much better player so far for them.

I haven’t seen UGA play this year yet, they have any game?
The problem with UGA is they simply cannot score at all. They don't have the offense.

Its going to be tough for them to do much in SEC play unless their defense can force enough to create offense. I just don't think they have the shooters.

I agree, Battles can score but is adjusting to the physicality in this league. They are counting on Warren to score more than she is capable of.
