North Carolina & Wake Forrest schedule non-ACC home/home series

One of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

One wonders if UNC is concerned about how its potential sanctioning will affect its capacity to schedule. Still stupid.

As far as WF is concerned, no clue why they would do this.

I believe UT and Vandy did this in women's basketball back in the 90's. Never seen it football.

Probably just had enough of getting blasted by ECU each year. The Clawfense should be getting Wake Forest athletes the ball in space with ease come 2019.

I think some SEC coaches have asked for this. Some want to do away with cross divisional rivals and rotate the 2 teams. I think Les Miles said if Vols and Bama want to play every year then they can and count it as an out of conference game. Then we would play Bama plus 2 other west teams each year.

It was one: Les Miles...and it was because he didn't want to have to play Florida each season.

(But, hey, I mean why would you want to play a major team in your conference when there's a chance a full rotating schedule could give you Vandy AND Kentucky in the same season!)

Spurrier, also, had some complaints at one point, but his was that a team's opposite divisional games shouldn't count towards that team's own divisional standings.

As far as the story at hand, yeah this is just bizarre...and the idea of other major schools doing it as a scheduling solution isn't comforting.

I mean I get there's a rivalry aspect there, but I'm questioning whether that was actually the main reason for this move.

I'm wondering if the ACC should explore rearranging their divisions if all the NC schools not playing each other every year is a big issue.

It's currently:

Atlantic---------------Coastal
Boston College-------Virginia Tech
Clemson--------------Georgia Tech
Florida State----------Miami
Louisville--------------Virginia
NC State--------------North Carolina
Syracuse--------------Pittsburgh
Wake Forest------------Duke

I guess if Duke & UNC were moved into the Atlantic or NC State & Wake Forest into the Coastal, maybe either Florida State (if moving Duke/UNC) or Miami (if moving NCST/Wake) could be put into the open/opposite division to pair them up with their rival?

However it would be done, they'd have to balance it, though, while preserving major rivalries.

Clemson and GT still need to play.
Clemson and NCST still need to play.
Miami and FSU still need to play.
UVA still needs to play UNC every year.

VT still needs to be able to play UVA.

...I guess Pitt and Syracuse would still need to play? I'm unfamiliar with the history of that matchup.

So I thought on my earlier post for a bit...it seems that if all the NC schools are put in one division, then UVA and VT would need to be in the opposite. And presuming Pitt and Syracuse still need to play each other, so would they.

That would mean so far Division "A" and "B" would look like:

A: UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest
B: UVA, VT, Syracuse, Pittsburgh

Leaving the following 6 teams: FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Louisville, Boston College

-------------------

I came up with 3 (more or less) possible set ups:

  1. The first has Miami & FSU in "B," Clemson & GT in "A”….with Louisville & Boston College split between divisions (this one might work best)

A: UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville/Boston College
B: UVA, VT, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, FSU, Miami, Louisville/Boston College

    Required as permanent cross-division games: UNC-UVA, Clemson-FSU...
    • If Louisville is in “A”, somehow match up GT & Louisville against VT & Miami (so either GT-VT & Louisville-Miami OR GT-Miami & VT-Louisville)
    • If Boston College is in “A,” somehow match up GT & BC against VT & Miami (so either GT-VT & BC-Miami OR GT-Miami & VT-BC)

  2. Miami & FSU are in “A,” Clemson & GT are in “B”…with Boston College & Louisville split between divisions.

A: UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, Miami, FSU, Louisville/Boston College
B: UVA, VT, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Boston College/Louisville

Required as permanent cross-division games: UNC-UVA, Clemson-NC State…and then match up of GT & VT against FSU & Miami somehow (probably GT-FSU & VT-Miami)

  3. Miami, FSU, & Clemson all in “A,” with Boston College, Louisville, & Georgia Tech in the other

A: UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, FSU, Miami, Clemson
B: UVA, VT, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Louisville, Georgia Tech

    Required as permanent cross-Matchups: UNC-UVA, Georgia Tech-Clemson….and somehow match VT & Louisville against FSU & Miami (so either VT-Miami & FSU-Louisville or FSU-VT & Miami-Louisville).

Probably not that bad of an idea, honestly. Attendance would be higher for this game than if UNC scheduled a FCS team, plus this game will most likely be televised.

I can see why both schools agreed to this, but it's still a strange move. I hope this doesn't become a trend.

Oh, no, they're almost certain to still schedule an FCS game for one of the three open remaining out of conference slots.

True. I'm sure the normal announced 52,000 at the concrete jungle that is Kenan stadium will be standing room only.
