Will the SEC ever get better officials... Not just talking about BB either. I seriously feel like out of every conference, the SEC has by FAR the worst in BB and FB.

Whoa. Hold your horses on calling out our football officials. I think they do a damn good job most of the time. The SEC has never had to suspend officials for blowing calls in football like other conferences.

Our basketball officials are fairly terrible. No doubt.

i've seen some big ten bball games where they let the players play during the regular season and during the big ten tourny tighten things up. sec is fairly bad.

These guys call in different multiple conferences besides the SEC. If you go to statsheet.com and click on College BB then Referees. It will bring up their home page. You can click on one. For example one guy, Mike Kitts, worked an SEC game on Sat, ACC on Sun, Big East on Mon, and SEC on Tues. So these guys are not strictly SEC. Some of these guys call in multiple conferences.

College basketball refs in general are terrible. Half the time, I think they don't know the rules. It's THAT BAD.

They call offensive fouls when the defender undercuts a guy jumping for a dunk/layup.

They call travelling when a guy does a crossover, but not when he drives to the basket and takes 3 steps.

And it seems like in EVERY game, one team always gets favorable calls from the officials while the other gets snubbed.

There have been PLENTY of poorly called games in college football before, but college basketball refs are 100x worse. They are the worst refs in ANY sport, in my opinion.

I think the ref'ing was pretty bad for both teams. They blew calls left and right. It seemed like they hurt UT more down the stretch, but State got their share of bad ones as well. You never want to see refs decide a game one way or another, but I think the refs played too much of a role in deciding this one. I can honestly say that I think State still would have won had the refs butted out, but it was definitely frustrating nonetheless.

Someone brought up the point (I think it was hatvol) that the refs are the only ones who are protected and don't have to be held accountable. I'm one of those who agrees and thinks they should be fair game in the media room after every game like everyone else.

We got a couple of bad calls for sure, but as the OP pointed out, we can't blame the loss on them. I hate to gripe too much about the officiating, lest I sound like all the Memphis fans around here.

I agree with KoachKrab, college basketball refs in general suck. I think the refs do a good job in football though.

I counted at least three horrible calls on us. Miss st had a few go against them too. The officiating has been a joke all year long.

I don't know if it has something to do with the tempo of the game or what, but yeah, college basketball referees are so much more dreadful than college football referees.

Bob Knight had that piece about a month ago about how travelling is never properly called. It feels like I see travelling all the time and it's so often ignored.

Traveling always happens. Shoulda had an intentional called when Hopson was fouled. Don't think it was 5 secs on Tyler. Prince walked. And when miss st was trapped out of bounds im pretty sure he got fouled. JMO. Officials blow

If you think that, you must never watch the PAC 10.

As poorly as the game today was officiated, I must admit, it was poor on both sides. It seemed like they got caught at one point in the second half in a continous loop of "make up calls".

The free throw discepancy is pretty telling as well. And typically this could be a result of shot selection. Not true in this contest.

my old neighbor is a ref, who just scored a "5 outta 5" at some ref evaluation/camp and has been doing mid major conferences/games, he told me that the SEC will be getting rid of a lot of refs next year and he hopes to be bumped up

First off...I'm a Mississippi State alumnus. I live in Knoxville now and it is great to be back in SEC country after 3 years in big XII and big ten cities. I wanted to come here and read what you guys were saying because I think this game was played well, and with a lot of intensity. I actually gained even more respect for the Vol players and Coach Pearl after tuning into the complete post-game coverage on radio. The guys were very humble and it is great to know how much they appreciated (in a loss) that another SEC team made it in, in such a bleak year.

Yes, the officiating was absolutely horrendous. I cannot recall how many times, being neutral, I said "what a bad call." Either way, it was not consistent. Being an MSU fan and feeling bad for UT on some of those plays is tough, but it was true. Secondly, how on earth do you guys draw that seed. I am completely upset at a 13, and playing a 4 basically at home but.....

You guys are one of the two premier teams in the league, amazing rpi, un-matched SOS, and you draw dead. Is Slive trying to be modest? We got hosed, you guys got hosed, and LSU, as the #16 team in the nation last week, got hosed. They drew as if ranked outside the top 25. Bad play down the stretch, but a great basketball team. I wonder in this year of BigEast sucking up, why the brackets worked out the way they did. After my relentless b**ching, I am thankful for being in but seriously? UT, LSU, MSU did no deserve this. Auburn and SC being out I can somewhat understand, but we have no leverage as a conference in this tournament. Thank god we continually win national championships.

Once again, the purpose of this post (because I know many of you won't want me here) was that I experienced my first week in beautiful Knoxville and my school happened to match up with UT and I am impressed at the aftermath. Coach Pearl and the guys surprised me after the game with their comments and I hope they are sincere. Good luck to your team. The talent is amazing and I am glad today ended as is so that we made it in. I will be rooting for you guys around town, so long as we don't match up in the FF.

cheers,
bulldog fan

There should be accountability for officials who screw up rules or call things that are just not there. A former SEC supervisor one time told me about being at a UT game that had Bruce Benedict in the game. He screwed up several calls. He went to the locker room after the game and told Benedict he was the sorriest ref he had ever seen and he wasn't joking. Benedict has since lost his SEC schedule. There needs to be more accountablilty. These guys are paid very well and should have to perform at a high level like at any other occupation.
