...have the Vols given up more than 70 points.

That's gotta be a NCAA record for this season.

And probably an historic SEC conference-game record since the 50s.

Very impressive, especially considering how the game has evolved into a shoot out (NBA). You don't see many teams now that can say their defense is their best attribute. Yes, I understand you have to play D to win, no sh*t. But I love the way our team has embraced CCM's style and demeanor. Reminds me of Rocky, which is cheesy I know, but our defense can keep us in any game with any team. If your rely on O, what happens when your shots aren't falling? That happens to every team at some point. But defense is something that you CAN control and can be must more consistent at. Very optimistic! Go VOLS!!!!

We have a very underrated defense it seems. You keep hearing of how Kentucky is all world in D. Outside of Davis, I don't think they can match our intensity for 40 minutes.

Definitely impressive, I doubt it's anywhere near a record though.

Love the defensive intensity. VOLS, B!TCH!!!

This. John Chaneys Temple teams would hold people to 50 points out less almost every night. Love what this team has accomplished. Go Vols!

It's pretty simple, defense wins games. Once the team started to buy in, they started to win.

Have you ever seen Wisconsin play? Their typical score line looks something like this: Opponent X 38, Wisconsin 39. But you're spot on in principle. UT is a solid defensive team, and they play extremely hard. I hope they do some good things in the SEC Tournament.

That is an interesting stat!

I dug out the old UT records and both the 1963/1964 and the 1964/1965 Ray Mears teams only allowed one team to score in the 70s in each of those years. But, they were at Georgia and at Vanderbilt.

So, this is some accomplishment for Martin's Vols.

An even bigger accomplishment, if you ask me. Those stats you point to all belong to years before the shot clock as well as the 3-point line. It's much more difficult to hold opponents to a lower score today.

Wisconsin's offense suffers because of the way they play, IMO. No way I would want to have a team that scores the way they do.

Good points.

There are a few other differences that also tended to keep the scores low. For the first 6 fouls of a half, the teams would shoot one and only one foul shot, and they stayed in a 1 and 1 situation even after the reached 10 fouls in a half instead of getting the two shot bonus.

If so, it was before dunking, 3 pointers and 35-second shot clock.

In any event, I'll bet Kentucky never held the sec to 70 all year.
