Notre Dame considering joining a conference

I wouldn't call the addition of Notre Dame a big plus or minus either way for the Big Ten. They'd fit nicely somewhere around the middle.

Are you kidding? It would be a blockbuster move for the Big 10. They get the TV markets for Notre Dame and adding a 12th team enables them to play a championship game. It would be huge for them financially.

Seems like rumors about ND joining a conference arise every year, only for nothing to happen. I won't hold my breath.

you know im smarter than that. I meant purely in terms of football quality.

every conference would kill for nd and their built in tv market.

We do have these rumors every year, but I think this time it actually has more legs than before.

BT expansion push could force ND's hand

By Adam Rittenberg | ESPN
March, 9, 2010

Very interesting news out of New York today, as Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick told reporters that the recent expansion push in college athletics could force the school to consider relinquishing its football independence.

The door to South Bend definitely has been cracked open a bit, which could be huge for the Big Ten...

The game has now changed. The Big Ten is more attractive than ever, largely because of the successful Big Ten Network. Everyone used to talk about Notre Dame's exclusive TV contract with NBC, but Notre Dame would make much more in television revenue -- possibly double the amount -- if it joined the Big Ten.

Notre Dame also could gain more exposure for its nonrevenue sports by joining the Big Ten. The costs of keeping so many sports afloat are only going up, so anything these athletic departments can do to bring in more revenue is key...

There was an article about a year ago that said bottom feeder BCS schools like Vanderbilt, Iowa State and Northwestern will clear more $$$ under the SEC/Big 12/Big 10's TV contracts than Notre Dame would under their current deal with NBC.

Unless NBC ponies up some bigger dollars, the time is right for Notre Dame to make this move.

Well that though might also depend on how much longer NBC's current contract with Notre Dame is

I know they just agreed to a new deal like I think at the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008

found it; they signed a new contract in 2008 that lasts for 5 years, after the current one expires in 2010....so till 2015 i guess

If I'm the Notre Dame AD and I see NBC hemorrhaging money on the freaking Olympics, as they reportedly did in both Beijing and Vancouver, then I am pretty damn nervous about how negotiations are going to go when my exclusive contract with them -- the foundation of my program's budget -- comes up for renewal in a few years. I'm looking at the SEC's deal with ESPN and the Big 10 network, and I'm wondering what happens to me in a few years when NBC's guys have to decide how much a slumping brand like Notre Dame football is worth to them. The smart move for them is to suck it up and get in the Big 10 while they still can.

again people hello, contract till 2015. Notre Dame would probably have to pay NBC a lot if they chose to break the contract

So? They're making less from their TV deal than Vanderbilt gets from being in the SEC, once you add up the ESPN contract, the CBS contract, and the bowl money. And that's with no guarantee that anyone will be willing to pay anywhere near $15m/year for Notre Dame football once the contract runs out in 2015. If Kelly has two or three bad years and the Big 10 is off the table and NBC decides it wants out when it's time to renegotiate, then the Domers are screwed. I have no idea what the provisions of the contract are, but unless getting out early is just ridiculously punitive, then the smart thing is to get locked into a slice of the Big 10 pie while it's still available.
