Pete Fiutak seems to think so. This piece is his opinion on the matter, but poses some excellent offseason questions/debates.

Handful of key schools in play as conference realignment looms - CFB News - FOX Sports on MSN

As Volunteers, and more importantly SEC fans, how would you feel if ND joined the SEC? I remember that "which team do you hate the most" thread and a lot of you mentioned ND. Would you welcome them to the SEC? Would this move diminish your/our current rivals (bama, UF, UGA)?

not happening. but hypothetically speaking, They would immediately be up there with Bama and UF, but I would def not say ahead of them by any stretch of imagination.

South bend is very close to chicago. I think the team should be from a place with a southern accent, considering we are the SEC. Hell no!

i hate ND, but not as a rivalry game like fl or al. i just got sick of everyone talkin about them. i don't see it being a good fit at all

At the end of the day, it's all about $$$$$. Pete is a beat writer and constant SEC basher, yet he wrote this and seems to think it makes the most sense for ND... at least from what i can gather.

All of this is definitely about money. Notre Dame has their own network though, so I'm not sure how it would be an upgrade for them.

Is Texas on the Pacific coast? What about Colorado? If the SEC has a legit shot at Notre Dame, they won't care.

Makes no sense geographically. There are lots of schools that do though...

Texas
Texas A&M
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Florida State
Miami
Georgia Tech
Memphis
Clemson
North Carolina
Louisville
Virginia Tech
West Virginia

...Why Notre Dame? So many options that make more sense.

Might as well let Michigan and Ohio State in, lol. Southern Schools Only. I would even have trouble with Miami because its not from a place with southern tradition.

notre dame wouldnt survive the sec. they would never contend for a championship. it just doesnt seem likely that they make a move. personally. id love to see texas, and clemson.

Looks like the SEC TV deal was signed in the nick of time. I agree that Slive better be on the proactive side of the shift, but at least we aren't the target of any "raids" right now.

At first glance, I figured that Texas, with all of their political clout could actually find a way out by themselves if they really wanted to. That is simply not the case. From the buzz it looks like Nebraska will make the first move out of the Big12. Notre Dame is going to take their time...because they can.

It's about revenue, not geography.

I don't really care who we bring in as long as they increase our revenue for each school and are a quality football program.

I still feel like we need a team from either Texas, NC, Virginia or somewhere outside of the box to make an expansion worth it.

No way ND joins the SEC. Not a chance.

And I don't want them in our conference either.

That is the most overrated school in college football. They havent been relevant since before we won the national title in '98. Their past 3 coaches have been jokes. They're to scared to even join the Big 10.

A friend of mine is a ND fan and told me last year before the season started that ND was going to be an 11 win team in 2009.

I hate Notre Dame. In fact, I hate them so much the idea of sharing a conference with them disgusts me. No thanks.

Considering the revenue they would bring, one would have to overlook their shortcomings on the field, but I personally think the academic compromises required to compete would prohibit any deal.

they'd have to void a awful lot of nonconference game agreements. very much doubt they do that. the big-10 would be a much easier transition.
